An AI artist explains his workflow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0ldxCh3cnI
Interestingly, it took 17h to arrive to the final result. Not what you expected, right?

Once people get over the wonder of AI models, and "crafts people" have some time to "maker" explore , we'll start to see more craftwork examples like this rather scattershots of what's possible.
He started with a "sketch of the outcome" (vision/mission) - This orienting + anchoring step is one that non-makers omit and don't set up their efforts to be feedback-directed as they explore in the infinity of possibilities.

Four months late, a year-end post disguised as a quarterly report…

A mentor once encouraged me to set priorities rather than goals. In 2023, I'm imagining a new and luxurious relationship to time, so I can waste it.

I truly find it so irritating when people don't care enough to ask about my professional experience so they make enormous assumptions about what I have or haven't done (like, assume I need advice about "showing a connection to ROI from all those intangible things" when I was literally an efficacy researcher in education). The amount of lecturing-instead-of-encouragement-or-sponsorship you get as a female leader is just bananas.

dahukanna,
@dahukanna@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina the pontificating, preening lecturing has got to go!
I really dislike the “uninformed and stereotypical judgement” people are quick to make to judge others and situations based on the vapor of their assumptions (taken as true without proof).
This puts a toxic “provide proof and evidence tax” on the judged due to the limited experience of the judging.

One of the consequences of the current AI tech is who it empowers and enriches.

  1. It pillages digital content without consent & compensation.
  2. Requires $100,000s & days or weeks to train it on pillaged data to “get it to work”.
  3. It generates BS misinformation.
  4. It does all this faster than any human expert could edit and correct.

This is digital colonialism. I’m waiting for the corporate “Berlin Conference” notes to show up - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Conference

@atpfm How do you setup your developer environment on your Macs (or other platforms)?

How do you install Xcode?
What about other systems that depend on Xcode Command Line Tools?
Homebrew?
Environment managers like nvm (node version manager)?
Compile stuff yourself?
Regular installers?

I’m setting up a new Mac (Mini M2 Pro) and was curious how you guys approach this.

dahukanna,
@dahukanna@mastodon.social avatar

@torb @atpfm

  1. Start new Mac.
  2. Install all of Xcode including CLI tools - (writing this on mobile so don’t have the terminal command).
  3. Install podman(personal)/Docker Desktop Business(work).
  4. Clone my git repo for portainer virtual mount point.
  5. Import ephemeral container images from old machine and continue from where I left off.
    Containers have nvm, rvm, virtual Python or whatever setup is required.

I am slowly working my way through learning Nix.

torb, to rust

If I plan to do both various kinds of development (Swift, Node and maybe C++, Rust and/or Kotlin), what is the best way to set up a Mac for development?

XCode alone is my biggest confusion here. Not only are there many ways to install XCode itself, but many non-Swift developer tools seem to be dependent on either XCode itself or XCode Command Line tools.

For example, certain Node-projects that call into native code needs some kind of access to LLVM (as does Rust), and that is connected to XCode somehow.

I’ve got a fresh Mac (Mini M2 Pro) and I want to set it up in a clean way from the get go!

dahukanna,
@dahukanna@mastodon.social avatar

@torb

same & I encapsulate all that one time setup activity in containers. So I can literally set it up once & forget it.

Got tripped up with the move to arm-based processor & needed to either:

  1. add a flag to get it intel based containers running
    or
  2. rebuild the container environment with arm-based image.

Weirdly some node projects have node-module dependencies that have only been compiled for intel chip. I’m not interested in recompiling dependencies deep in the dependency tree.

Cohost does seem like a nice community in a lot of ways, but I’m just not very motivated to spend time in a social network that isn’t and has no plans to be federated.

dahukanna,
@dahukanna@mastodon.social avatar

@torb

Analogy incoming:
Discussing protocols in “social media” context is like discussing plumbing, which is absolutely necessary for a building structure that will house people.

We usually don’t ask people to choose a house or office based on plumbing(protocol) architecture, it’s not the relevant level of abstraction. Plumbing is usually encapsulated within load bearing structure of the building I.e. the walls.

What do the “walls” of your application look like to people who are using it?

dahukanna,
@dahukanna@mastodon.social avatar

@torb

2/2-“Not spend time in a social network that isn’t & has no plans to be federated.” - I agree.
That’s like building a gated community on land in the middle of a city that has no road, electricity, water or other “civil” infrastructure.

So many questions:
Why was it created in the first place?
How are people going to get there?
How do people get in?
How do they build a community within a wider society?

We accept doors & locks on houses. What’s equivalent for communities with weak ties?

dahukanna,
@dahukanna@mastodon.social avatar

@torb not intended as a critique of your comment. It prompted me to comment on the ongoing tangential Fediverse user onboarding conversation. I agree with you.

What is something you learned in math that made you loose a sense of innocence-- knowledge that you can never unlearn that changes the world forever?

dahukanna,
@dahukanna@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird philosophy of maths undergraduate course where I left furious & depressed at the same time.

Main gist of that lecture was, “ everything you know, been taught & ever learned, is just plain wrong, in error & it is ,at best, an approximation, with integrals between human perception and actual full reality.

Furious - so I’ve spent my whole life in school up to this point learning what exactly?
Depressed - This is shite! How on earth, stars & universe am I gonna figure things out?
