Law and policy commentary from UK.

I also geek out here about lore and fantasy, which are my real interests, as well as about other cultural stuff.

I am often ironic and not always earnest, and so please don't take some of the things I post at face value.

Any “constitutional” or legal questions about the general election?

Ask below and I will reply if I can.

(I used to do this sort of thing on Twitter and I thought I would give it a go here.)

@KayeMac04

My post later today at Prospect addresses this possibility. tldr hypothetically possible before 30 May but unlikely

@jonbelcher

Who knows. There is a list circulating of possibles. I will link to it later.

Ministers of the Crown remain Ministers of the Crown: government is unaffected in principle. It is parliament that is dissolved, not the government.

We tried fixed terms in 2011. Didn’t work in political reality.

And yes, a waste and a shame.

I have just enjoyed typing out a post for Prospect more than I should have done on the constitutional context of yesterday rain-drenched drama.

Will be up later.

New by me

Another inquiry report, another massive public policy failure revealed

If we had proper parliamentary accountability and ministerial responsibility in real-time, we would not have to keep relying on inquiries to reveal what really happened.

In principle, yes. Or just the extension to select committees of the powers of statutory inquiries.

Impossible to predict any jury trial.

But Trump’s defence strategy not hopeless.

By not putting forward a positive account of what happened, he has made it as much a trial of Cohen as of himself. And Cohen is a self-confessed liar and grudge holder.

The prosecution have worked hard - very hard - to corroborate Cohen’s evidence. Will it be enough? If the jury don’t believe Cohen then Trump may get his acquittal, despite the other supporting evidence.

davidallengreen,
@davidallengreen@mastodon.green avatar

@Scurra

The crux of the offence - falsification of records - depends largely on Cohen’s evidence. Daniels’ evidence not relevant to that crucial point.

How the Good Friday Agreement checks and balances the UK government

With the disapplication of the Rwanda policy in Northern Ireland, we can see how the 1998 treaty practically limits the power of the UK executive

The Good Friday Agreement fundamentally re-cast our constitutional arrangements.

And the story of Brexit, and now also of the Rwanda policy, is that of our governing party constantly being taken by surprise by this.

No idea if Trump will be found guilty or not in the New York trial.

But the trial is a veritable boon for the public understanding of fraught client-attorney relationships.

Sunak’s great plan for the UK is to turn it into a research and innovation powerhouse by deterring foreign students from coming to the universities whose ability to research and innovate depends on their fee income.

And so I should significantly reduce the circulation of liberal constitutionalist content accordingly?

I was already "aware of the reasons given by leaders" - indeed that was the very context of the exchange you are joining.

So the only reason for you adding that (obvious) comment must be critical.
