Takeshi "fluffy", the onigiri cat. 2007 - 2024

Rest well my little fluffball emperor. I will forever cherish the kind, gentle companionship you gave us, and all the computers you graced with your beans and fluff.

You will always be in my heart. Love you buddy.

Fluffy passed away in my arms in the early hours Tuesday. We buried him draped in my purple scarf along with his favorite toy, my black shoe string. He was seventeen.

I've lost both my babies now. They were my world.

MISSED CONNECTION:

We built forts out of wooden boxes in Ultima Online on the island of Moonglow. You tried to get revenge against that PK, but he turned you into a ghost (ooOo oOo). Your partner had sympathy when I got scam'd on e'bay for that black dye tub.

I lost your ICQ#

What’s that one anachronism you always pick up in movies and tv? Susan Kare’s Chicago font in 1940s small town America? A canon 5D dslr winding on film in Skyline? VT100s in a monsterverse scene in 1974?

discatte,

@NanoRaptor X-Files having very period correct computers from early 90s to 00's that Dana would write her field notes in. And a nice Handspring Visor on the desk of one of the FBI directors.

A small confession. There's a group of people I've come to hate harder and more consistently than any other group I interact with on the Internet: people who jam into every which way they can, into completely unrelated projects and items, to say "Can you please upload [obscure or not obscure tv show or vhs tape that there is no indication the person has].

I hate these people. When I'm mayor their streets will be plowed last. I will make them wait for 3 hours while letting newcomers come by.

discatte,

@textfiles my favorites are people who leave 1 star 'this sucks' reviews.. of archive uploads.

thanks living incarnation of the comic book guy.

The problem with designing a 'retro' website, is there are several distinct ages of html/visual styling and I know them all.

and sadly the best parts of the geocities/tripod/lycos era dont work now.

I opened the PCMCIA floppy disk that is used on the contura aero, I see the floppy disk controller chip, I guess the other smaller one is a PCMCIA bridge, because the mask ROM is connected to it, interesting.

    discatte,

@kiwa pcmcia cards always seem cursed like 'heres a standard chip' and 'mystery magic gate array'

that one looks like an MB624xxxx series

lately i've been thinking about some of my early 2000s web experiences, where broadband finally had rolled into my city and it suddenly became possible to really share files on P2P networks. searching through the network could keep me up until 3am some nights.

this was the first video i ever downloaded, found on some random person's napster share while I was searching for Nine Inch Nails live bootlegs. i must have watched it hundred times that first year.

known as an AMV or Anime Music Video, it introduced me to Ghost in the Shell, Serial Experiments Lain, and Akira. 😻

A four-minute Anime Music Video set to Nine Inch Nails' The Becoming. Animation sequences are from Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Serial Experiments Lain.

    discatte,

@vga256 gotta start a new AMV pirate ring where kids can trade phresh vidz without copyright strikes.

One of those seared in computer memories I have is playing the midi songs that came with my first WAVETABLE card.

Kid brain me was amazed by the 'realistic' sound coming from those definitely-not-stolen midi arrangements of classic rock.

I believe it was an OPTi of some sort. The driver cd's were always a dice roll on what cool stuff you'd find amongst the badly organized folders.

    discatte,

Keep in mind this is Windows 3.1, and pre DirectMusic/MicrosoftGS. So switching from adlib to a card with its own samples was magical.

this is the truly depressing reality of macos software development

my OS - macos (big sur) - is three years old.

developers, i know this stuff is harder to make backwards-compatible, but jesus

edit: replyguys: i've been developing software for macOS for 20 years. i don't need to hear excuses about why you feel it's difficult to do.
