Kate Bush - The Dreaming

Something happens when an artist goes down a rabbit hole of obsession, driven to realize a specific vision. Kate Bush locked herself down with a Fairlight, producing herself, and made this absolute masterpiece...my favorite of her albums, by far.

Dense, dark, brooding-yet-playful, constantly surprising.

I have a few copies of it...this is a new one from Fish People with special artwork and a "belt" of chains.

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights

A perfect debut album, with nary a misstep.

VMP pressing mastered by Barry Grint, spread over 2LPs, gives everything space to breathe.

App Store WTF of the Week: DealMachine for Real Estate
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/03/12/dealmachine-wtf

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@daringfireball @gruber I’m seriously confused by this take. This is happening in Apple's own app store, not in some 3rd party store. And 3rd party stores are, themselves, "managed" by Apple. Wouldn't those 3rd parties have at least the same desire to prevent abuse, if not more, since Apple can deprive them of…everything, with a click.

On top of that, do we find that this is some sort of big problem with, say, macOS or Windows apps? Even those managed by subscriptions?

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@gruber OK (although I would suggest that the majority of apps on the App Store are free), but not really relevant?

My point is more that your suggestion that 3rd party app stores, authorized and effectively "policed" by Apple, are going to allow more of this kind of scam...a scam that Apple itself allowed.

I don't see why that would be. Given Apple's control over their authorization, any significant number of complaints against 3rd party stores would be hazardous to their continued survival.

Jackie McLean - Demon's Dance

I was going to say that this is awfully close to post-bop for 1970, but then I read that it was recorded in 1967...so maybe not so unusual.

A very good session from McLean, Woody Shaw (trumpet), Jack DeJohnette (drums), Lamont Johnson (piano) and Scott Holt (bass). It's always fun to listen to DeJohnette, especially, go all out swinging (title track) and then pull way back on the next. He knows what to do...

Beck - Sea Change

Beck Hansen has a sad.

(This may be my favorite Beck album, and it's a really great recording, too.)

Still ironing out the details, but I'm having fun adapting Black Ink (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/black-ink-crosswords/id312142427) to visionOS properly. Hope to get the app update out within the next few weeks.

I saw you name pop-up in a re-toot and looked at the picture and was like "yep, that's the David Pollak I know!” :-)

Tony Bennett & Bill Evans - The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album

A pretty special meeting of the minds - and something to break out with the recent(ish) loss of Bennett.

Given Bennett's more commercial bent, and Evans' more introverted style, it's interesting to hear how well they work together. And it's especially nice to have Bennett singing so simply, with just a piano accompanying him.

A classic, of course.

I had no idea Snack Mate (renamed “Easy Cheese” in 1984, because normal cheese is SO HARD, guys) started in 1966.

I regret that I do not have a Snack Mate Idea Book, because these ideas are killer.

You'll be sad when the apocalypse arrives and you don't have a can of needs-no-refrigeration spray cheese.

Also, gotta assume that cheese whippets are a thing.

XTC - English Settlement

It's possible this is the album I've listened to more than any other, as I played it incessantly back when it was released, having bought the import before the (butchered) US release came out.

Colin Moulding absolutely kills it with the two opening tracks, and his fretless work is fantastic all the way through. Partridge’s songs are mostly great, but he occasionally sabotages himself, as is his wont.

The band’s in top form: a beautiful record.

Katy J Pearson - Sound of the Morning

Came upon this kind of sideways - Katy sang on one of the new Yard Act songs, so I checked out her most recent LP streaming… and liked it enough to buy it.

This is relatively eclectic, with lots of melodic content. Some quite poppy, some a big folky. Sometimes she uses her voice and vibrato (and minor melodies) in a way that strongly recalls Stevie Nicks.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

Oh, and yes - the last track on the album is from the original version of The Wicker Man.

Hi, friends. Today is a very special day because I got to launch Television, the visionOS app I dreamed up a few months ago, and partnered with a very talented developer named Andy Roth and my dear bud @dan to make this thing real.

It's the future of television.

@adamlisagor @dan Does this mean we’ll also get a virtual TV Dinner in-app purchase? Because my mashed potatoes often touch my turkey gravy in real life and it makes me sad.

@viticci Federico - have you run into the problem where the Shortcuts "extract" action stops working and throws (generic) errors, on a basic ZIP with a folder in it, with no way to fix it, even after a reboot?

If so...have you found a way around the problem? Even happens with your (Library) shortcuts…

@siracusa Regrettably, I have, indeed, entertained those thoughts.

One problem with subscriptions for things that are mature is that you end up with bloat to try to add “value”, though…

@bynkii @chuqvr @roland @uliwitness @boris Or you continue to grow your market, which is what we've done, and keep your organization small.
