If you are a Chrome user, you've probably been been opted-in to Google's enhanced tracking system without any warning.

Chrome's newest update pretends to provide users "Enhanced ad privacy", but actually enrolls Chrome users into a new trackings system.

To disable Google's "advanced" ad tracking, go to Settings>Privacy and Security>Ad Privacy and disable all three options there (Ad Topics, Site-suggested Ads, and Ad Measurement).

Have you ever noticed that most self-driving cars don't have any passengers?

"Deadheading" is an industry term for keeping driverless cars in constant motion, even when they have neither a passenger nor a destination. Waymo & Cruise rely on deadheading to avoid paying for parking.

Why pay the city for public parking when you can store your car on the road for free (as long as it's moving)?

Since I've started keeping track, I've noticed that over 90% of the self-driving cars I see are empty...

Traffic at a busy intersection in San Francisco (Cesar Chavez and Guerrero). Most of the cars in the video are traditional cars with drivers, but three driverless Cruise cars pass by the camera. None of these driverless cars have passengers. At the stoplight, they all drive in different directions. It is not clear if they are driving to pick someone up, or just driving to avoid parking.

I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

My mind finally broke today when I got this comment on IG saying "public resources should only go to people who work jobs in this city". I typed up a response about how providing shelter for people who need it "saves taxpayers money" and could feel myself dying on the inside for even needing to explain it that way. What the fuck is wrong with people. Do things because they are the right thing to do, not because it might benefit you directly.

It's been 14 years since I drew this "Reverse-Trick-Or-Treating" comic.
It was based on a true story I found in a comment on Metafilter and is likely the most-viewed comic I've ever made. https://docpop.org/2009/11/the-greatest-halloween-costume-ever/

Saw this wild scene go down today and I wanted to share it with y’all. I was hanging out on 29th street when this self-driving car came to a stop in a nearby lane. I’m not sure if it was stuck or waiting for a pickup, but it sure was absolutely blocking traffic. After five minutes, a cyclist came by and yelled at the car to move. When it didn’t, he pulled out this “No Techno Fascists” sticker and slapped it on the window.

A self driving car blocking westbound traffic on 29th St. It’s a two lane road, so the cars behind the Waymo have to wait for the oncoming traffic to go away before they can pass it safely.

I don't think I've shared my Pac-Man sweater on Mastodon yet, but I thought some of y'all might like it.

We've published the pattern and more details on my blog. https://docpop.org/2017/12/pac-man-sweater-made-traditional-icelandic-style/

Let's take a moment to appreciate the fantastic art from "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot", which was 1st published by John Muir Productions in 1969.

The inside cover of the book. The art is extremely detailed and full of intricate lines and crosshatching. It has a unique 1960s style, like Robert Crumb's work.
A closer detail of the inside cover. This shows all the crosshatching and an intricate sketch of an engine.

An AI company complaining about having their art stolen? Oh, the irony.

A screenshot of Thomas Schulz's twitter profile says he runs an "office space for AI startups @ newtonsf.com"
A tweet from Brooke Bowman says "Oh man that’s really shitty, I’m so sorry I feel like that face looks familiar but I’m not able to call up a name" Thomas replies "Doing that is so cringe... we just want our painting back" And a twitter user named @im_right_though says "you stole her art without permission or compensation. how does it feel?" A few local artists are starting to realize groups like the Civic Joy Fund, TogetherSF, and It All Starts Here are being funded by billionaire backed lobbyist groups. These groups are actively trying to decrease spending on social services and increase police in SF.

When MessyBeck found out who was funding her art, it was too late to return the money. So she expressed herself by making a giant "Ethical billionaires don't exist" mural instead. https://www.instagram.com/p/CzoqHthrwGp/c/18002646239184197/

An Instagram Reel that says "When you get hired to do a community mural project about "civic pride" in San Francisco, and you find out it's being funded by billionaire-backed lobbyist groups AFTER you spent the deposit..." The video then shows a giant mural that says "Ethical billionaires don't exist" being painted. It also shows messages like "Healthcare is a human right" and "affordable housing for all". Then a message appears that says "It All Starts Here, Advance SF, Together SF, Avenue Green Light are all funded by Billionaires."

Last night, a group of pranksters (from the Raining Chainsaws collective) dressed up as traffic witches and cast holding spells on autonomous vehicles.

Tonight, we played a few games of Nego, a strategy game with cats. The rules are very simple, but there are some nice twists. The design of the physical pieces was our favorite part.

The game was designed by Yuka Morii, a Japanese clay artist and Pokemon illustrator.

I enjoyed it, but my partner felt it was boring. We both felt the game sort of plays itself as spaces become more limited. We both like it as a piece of art, though. The game is available here: https://www.japantrendshop.com/nego-cats-board-game-p-8267.html

Jack Dorsey referred to Twitter, the privately owned company that blocked links to competing social media platforms like Mastodon, as "freedom technology". What a clown.

He also deleted his account on Bluesky announced he's no longer on Bluesky's board of directors. Jack's involvement was one of the reasons I was never excited about #Bluesky, TBH.

In the spring of 2024, a local comic shop asked Doctor Popular to illustrate a promotional t-shirt for an upcoming fundraiser. The original design, "Batman Devouring His Young", was rejected by the comic shop upon review.
