Lots of good discussion on and going on. These four questions dominate my thinking:

  1. Can the ATProtocol really scale and federate? This is a very open question.

  2. Can BlueSky's ATProtocol moderation work at scale? Or even NOT at scale? Blurry still.

  3. Can the and improve its UX and UI experiences faster than the these first two things occur?

Lastly:

  1. How quickly do robust Fediverse/ATProtocol bridges emerge?

dominick,

@scottjenson @tchambers
I've seen open discussion around UX, but it's fraught because:

  1. The Mastodon team has limited dev resources and is spending most of them on improvements to security and scalability (which are arguably a higher priority).
  2. Because of (1), people feel bad criticizing the UX

The cool think about Masto, however, is that it's openness allows other teams (e.g. Elk.zone, Phanpy.social) to build their own compatible UI layer on top of Mastodon.

dominick,

@scottjenson @tchambers
I'm using Phanpy right now, which solves a ton of UX issues (e.g. making it clear who is replying to whom in a thread), but I really like the approach Elk takes to spacing, typography, lists, and account previews.

It would be great if the Mastodon team took some cues from either of these projects, but I'm happy to continue using them as my primary way of accessing Mastodon in the meantime.

Just realized that I'm working on a lot of Fediverse projects:

  1. , a federated audio/video P2P streaming server

  2. , a fully-managed Fediverse hosting service

  3. An "unnamed" federated crowdfunding platform

  4. An "unnamed" onboarding platform for the Fediverse

  5. A local Fediverse server, vancity.social, 's home on the Fediverse

  6. A general server, calckey.social

  7. An art server, calckey.art

  8. Testing of various clients and platforms...

dominick,

@atomicpoet I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on the advantages/tradeoffs of , , & , since you're so involved in all of them. I briefly joined a Pleroma instance (ironically named mastodon.tech) but performance was terrible and I think it had been abandoned.

It’s 2023 so it’s taken a while but Google Authenticator finally backs up MFA codes to the cloud

dominick,

@beekir @fatrat Depending on your threat model, it might be. It's opt-in, so you don't have to if you don't want to (although I still don't have the option on my device).

Surprising no one, is harvesting the browsing data of everyone using

dominick,

@beekir It's been a while since I had to use Teams on Linux, but it used to work in any chromium-based browser. Can you not use it with the de-googled version of chromium now?

dominick,

@aral @brunty I think I'm not following you. Are you saying that Google's funding of Mozilla is contributing to Firefox's lack of adoption?

dominick,

@beekir It's infuriating. I honestly prefer PWAs and webapps because (a) having a dozen electron apps open kills my machine performance, and (b) I can't keep an app from showing me ads/phoning home/etc, but I can keep my browser from doing that.

But when you deliberately break functionality in other browsers, I start to suspect you're up to no good...
