Hi there! I'm a software developer from Belgrade, Serbia, mainly dealing with distributed systems. An all-round nerd, minimalist and a tinkerer. I sometimes engage in political commentary. My opinions are my own. Besides computing, I'm interested in philosophy of religion, politics, psychology, biology and literature.

Messing around with Sphinx to see if we could improve the Hare docs with it, how do you feel this compares with the current approach?

https://sircmpwn.srht.site

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault @shurizzle I think the current one is fine. I can guess where a function I need might be just by seeing the list of packages on a page. Coupled with haredoc for quickly looking up the definition of functions you know exist and I wouldn't change much.

Dear @mozilla

Short list of things I do not need:

  • Web browser with built-in AI
  • Web browser with built-in VPN
  • Web browser with own brand of Social Media
  • Web browser with own brand of 3D Virtual World
  • Web browser with own brand of any other kind of content
  • Web browser owned by ad-network and search engine
  • Web browser owned by music or film industry
  • Web browser owned by any other major type of content provider

Short list of things I need:

  • A web browser that is just a web browser
dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@pmakholm @mozilla "Just a web browser" still translates to the largest C++ codebase known to humanity.

It's shocking how many things go into making a modern web browser. It's the culmination of over 30 years of work and a statement of just how much traction the web has garnered over the years.

Came back this morning from my trip to πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ώ.

Beautiful people, culture and food. I feel like I've spent two weeks in heaven.

While there, we visited mainland for a day at the Mikumi national park. It's all just so breathtaking.

I wholeheartedly recommend the trip to everyone.

Ah finally! The beloved underdog Chrome, made by the company that does-no-evil can finally break free of its oppressed corner of the market where it only holds... the majority. Amazing, now it can bring its ad tech EVERYWHERE. Is this astroturfing?

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@heapwolf This will also allow Firefox to enable the same kind of tracking protection they have on the Android platform and allow for browser extensions. This is a good thing.

@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@heapwolf If you go looking for problems you'll find some. Apple opening up their platform is a good thing, even if they themselves keep crying about it.

Google and Microsoft take another shot in their attempt to kill off open-standards-based-email:

https://support.google.com/a/answer/14114704

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@legalquilts @woody Unfortunately you gotta learn the process. Thankfully it's not too hard.

  1. Move elsewhere, there are tons of strong hosting options for email. Ask a friend if you can't do it yourself.

  2. Import your mail from the old mailbox. Some email clients offer this during setup, but manual import using IMAP isn't hard either.

  3. Forward your old mail address to your new one.

PS: What did you mean by "real life people"? That was worded poorly.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@woody I wish IMAP and SMTP would offer a way to do 2FA. It's fine to recognize the limitations of technologies older than the internet.

In that sense OAuth is indeed more secure, since you can tightly control privileges per client.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@woody Thunderbird has had OAuth support for quite some time now. You can easily use GMail or Outlook with it if you wish. Other clients have also implemented this.

I'm not defending either of these corporations, but I think you can find better arguments against them, even for email.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@legalquilts @woody Convenience is how they keep you glued to their services. They make it hard to leave on purpose. Digital freedom requires some inconvenience along the way.

If my 50 year old, not at all tech savvy, dad managed to follow my instructions in setting up IMAP and SMTP for an email client on his phone, I'm sure you can find some way to do it.

Stop giving slack to the argument of "Parents Rights."

Parents have responsibilities to uphold the rights of their children, not to control and dominate them into submission and assimilation.

Loving parents are not focused on the right to control their children, they are focused on their responsibilities to care, love, respect, and provide for their children.

"Parents Rights" is a dog-whistle for abuse.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@revoluciana Parenting is a difficult process where you must allow for some liberties for the children without allowing them to undermine your authority on matters they're not privy to.

You should be their friend, but you're their parent first and foremost.

I'm all for the middle ground. Not too stern, not too lax. Talk with your children, allow them to express themselves, but retain healthy authority where you need to.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@revoluciana It was definitely not my intention to explain anything to you. I'm sharing my opinion in response to your post. I'm also not undermining your right to existence in any way. I'm sorry, I definitely didn't mean to cause you any harm. We're just talking. πŸ™‚

is a , deal with it. It may call itself a library, but it isn't one. It's unopinionated, but that doesn't make it a library. I have a simple guideline that helps me determine the difference.

  • It runs my code and I have to structure my code to conform to its expectations -> framework
  • It becomes just a part of my code and helps me do some task -> library

React is a framework, albeit a minimal one, a micro-framework if you will.

There is a special circle of hell for lackeys who legitimise surveillance capitalists like Facebook and aid their efforts to take over (or at least sabotage) emergent non-corporate spaces like the fediverse when they should be protected from them at all costs. Those who give them every benefit of the doubt and temper all historic evidence of wrongdoing with anecdotes of the very good people they know who work there in good faith. You know who you are and exactly what you’re doing. Shame on you.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@aral I won't give up communication with my friends for ideology. Almost any micro blogging platform on the fediverse gives an incredible amount of control to the users to curate their feed as they wish. I don't want anyone to handhold me and make these decisions for me.
