Hi there! I'm a software developer from Belgrade, Serbia, mainly dealing with distributed systems. An all-round nerd, minimalist and a tinkerer. I sometimes engage in political commentary. Do you also dislike people who've made being "grown up" their personality?

Specifically their answers to why they can't do something are:

Video games - I'm a grown up
Conventions - I'm a grown up
Any hobby that isn't soulless and bland - I'm a grown up

One of my favorite electronica records finally arrived at my doorstep this morning. I forgot I even ordered it, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Trentemøller - The Last Resort

The debut album of a Danish electronic musician. It practically defined dark, somber electronica as a genre. A must listen for anyone who likes any kind of .

👏 NAT 👏 IS 👏 NOT 👏 A 👏 FIREWALL

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@mobiuscog You can easily traverse a NAT by using a third-party server as a relay. Beyond this, NAT gives you only the most basic of control, either the packets are allowed or they are dropped, there is no way to apply any sort of fine grade control, the way a firewall can. A firewall gives you ways to allow single IPs, groups of IPs on single or multiple ports, allows you to define zones of trust, etc... NAT was never meant to offer security. It's purpose is to make private IPs possible.

What a rabbit hole, integrating Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, Deluge and Jellyfin to completely automate the tracking, sorting, naming and searching of my entire media library.

If buying isn't owning, isn't stealing.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@albi Sonarr and Radarr automatically rename files to standard formats. Give them a shot, they're so much more than that.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@albi They don’t rename the original. They create a hard link to your destination directory and rename the link. 😁Hard links don’t take up any more space, it’s a double entry in the file allocation table, but the underlying bytes point to the same location on disk.

If your response to "we should dismantle this system of oppression" is "and replace it with what?" Or "only if we rebuild something functionally identical" you're a part of the problem.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@ajroach42 I think it's a legitimate question, though not a legitimate objection to the argument. Surely we need a plan and not just "we'll figure it out along the way". Dismantling the current system will also introduce a lot of new suffering that also has to be addressed by the plan.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@collette @ajroach42 I disagree. The principal example would the the French revolution. Where the social order was uprooted rapidly with no concrete plans for what should replace it. It created a state of constant fear and uncertainty. People were beheaded in the streets, panic was widespread. All of ti created a power vacuum that allowed Napoleon to, more or less, reinstate the status quo, albeit with some major reforms.

I am 100% on board with the idea that meaningful climate impact has to take place on a national and commercial scale, not an individual scale. I'm also aware that national and commercial interests propagandize people to act on an individual scale.

But I think it's gone a bit too far when the response to examining any detail of consumer climate impact is immediately shut down.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault General apathy amongst the population remains a problem that's not easily solved. It's not easy to motivate people to do anything that's not in their immediate interest. It's not only selfishness either. For instance, our country's got more immediate problems. Democracy is collapsing, the economy is in shambles and wealth inequality is far greater than it used to be under Socialism. The sad truth is, a single person can only care so much.

Terribly sorry to all of the gamers to whom I pointed out that your big PC gaming rig and/or expensive high-end gaming console is an extravagant Western luxury that participates in a great deal of carbon emissions across the industry compared to simpler gaming platforms like the Switch. I wish you a peaceful gaming session tonight, where this fact definitely should not weigh on your mind and affect your ELO or whatever.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault Lots of us from non-western countries enjoy our gaming consoles and PCs. I wouldn't exactly call it a western phenomenon.

Also, a current gen console is far cheaper than even a mid-range PC. I built my PC for around $2000 (if you include all peripherals) and my $600 Xbox Series X runs circles around it in gaming performance and power efficiency.

But, say all of what you say is true, does it still affect climate change that much? Cars and power plants contribute far more.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault And, gaming is as much a part of, specifically western, culture as music, film & tv or sports are. Everyone is now a gamer, it's not a niche anymore. It's here to stay, from garbage mobile cash grabs to AAA titles, there's truly something to satisfy every possible niche.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@odoruhako @drewdevault It's not the graphics. I love my Switch games, but I also love other games that are not available on Switch. You can't expect people to give up on things that are already in their possession and that they already paid good money for.

Had a free SATA slot on a computer I'm using as a home server, but I didn't have any hard disks lying around, until I noticed I have an external 2.5" 2TB HDD that's just collecting dust. I immediately cracked it open, to remove the hard drive and put it to good use.

A listing of all storage devices connected to my system, showing the now internal hard drive as device /dev/sda.

@joel They can, and you don't know unless you open them. This one was just a standard SATA HDD with a USB 3.0 controller. I got lucky. 😂

Play to win or play for fun is a false dichotomy. Winning is fun. Everyone wants to win. More specifically everyone likes good competition. So it comes as a surprise to me that you’re not supposed to announce your desire to win. If you do that everyone will team up against you. Why are we like this? Is it perceived arrogance on the part of the competitive player or something else?

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@albi I'm a competitive player, always have been, ever since I first played Monopoly as a kid. I find the act of winning with an optimal strategy really fun and exciting. Moreover I find defeating strong opponents more fun than beating a first-timer, so if it's a game I care about I'll invest time into teaching my friends my optimal strategy so that we can somewhat level the playing field. Simply put, I love competition and don't try to hide it.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@albi Now, there have been times where I've butted heads with people over trying to change the rules of games to make them "more fun", while all that does is throwing them off-balance and unnecessarily prolongs the play time. Monopoly is a prime example of this. Nobody seems to know the actual rules. 😂

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@mobiuscog I'm mostly talking about board and card games here, I forgot to mention that. They're kind of designed to be competitive. It's possible to be good at them, to formulate a strategy, to constantly improve your score, but some people think this detracts from the "fun". But, fun is subjective. I find it very fun to win and to get better and I don't hide it. For some reason, the moment your desire to win becomes known, the others will team up, hellbent to make you lose. 😅
