UK-based forever DM, #DnD5e and #Witcher. Mediocre at #Parkrun and other #running since 2019, Critical-Role-catcher-upper (🎶making our way🎶 through C3), possible dice goblin. Technically a cyborg, but not in an exciting way.

Occasionally plays #videogames when the kids let me near the TV.

My dice rolls pretty much sucked all session during our game today, but the dice were clearly saving themselves for a natural 20 on a Guiding Bolt attack against a wyrmling that was hurting two of my party members.

Blasted it out of the goddamned sky 🙂

Our local #parkrun posts up event photos online, I'm in a few of them today and I look knackered in every single one 😂

Still, it wasn't bad this morning, got round in 31:37, which isn't great, but is still better than last week.

Hey folks, I have a question - is there an online marketplace where people can self-publish Witcher material? I don't see anything on DriveThruRPG beyond the official stuff, not sure if R Talsorian permit or encourage self-published stuff?

Seen via a post on discord - HiSense smart TV borks user's computer, bluetooth due to frankly insane UUID generation spamming the local network.

https://cohost.org/ghoulnoise/post/5286766-do-not-buy-hisense-t

This kind of thing is why I haven't bought a new TV, even though I want one and can afford one, I want a dumb one and this seems almost impossible. Even if I got one and didn't give it direct network access, I'm not sure I'd trust it not to sneak online using HDMI and connect via more trusted devices...

Ran my 119th this morning, coming in at 30:15 which is my best time this year and my second best time ever.

Hitting my sub-30 PB last April was a fluke, one of those days when literally everything seemed to come right. I'm getting pretty consistently between 30-31 minutes now so hopefully it'll only be a matter of time before I break 30 minutes again.

I feel like I'm getting a lot better at pacing myself, which is really helping.

Today's session was helped out a lot by this four year old post on Reddit, where someone mapped out Cidaris and wrote up a whole bunch of NPCs and story hooks. Absolute gold.

Feeling quite "blarg" today, but wanted to share something that made me smile.

I found this last night, after thinking "I bet someone has done this", and you know the internet, it never fails to deliver.

(but I wanted to share this for more than just a silly video, fun as that is).

Been a while since I posted on - sorry! - so let's talk about the Fox People.

Out in the woods, just east of the Temple of Healing, is a ruined stone arch, capped with a keystone inscribed with the eye of Ioun, goddess of knowledge and magic. On the other side of the arch is the remains of a mosaic floor, mostly covered with weeds and earth. In the area are small fox statues, all sat down, all looking at the temple arch.

Had a strange moment earlier where I was scrolling through my mastodon timeline and someone was talking about the Tenderloin (TL) district of San Francisco, and I thought "ooh, I know where that is, it's between Ted Faro's tomb and the Sunwing nest on that ruined tower on the hill"...

Hmm, I've missed a couple of days of - never mind. Time to post something new about the world.

Entatratashan

Entatratashan was the first node of the Builder Network to be discovered by adventurers. Four days south of the home valley, not far from the gnome village of Riverglade, Entatratashan is a white tower atop a sandstone bluff. Originally inactive, it came to life after a party from the home valley reactivated an arcane power facility overgrown by forest.

This afternoon's session is best summed up by the quote from one of the other players:

"Well, that was a brilliant plan until the dice got involved."

As I stepped up to 2024, I asked Avrae to roll a d20, to check for traps.

Rolled a 2. But I'm sure it's fine.

So far this morning...

  • found out the toilet was blocked (sorted that)
  • heating/hot water was off as the boiler had lost pressure (repressurised, plumber coming Thursday)
  • the handle came off our kid's favourite mug (should be able to stick it)

Let's stop at three, yes?

Did some practice on the treadmill at the work gym this afternoon, took it a slower pace than I would for a 5k but managed to run for 25 minutes straight and I could have gone longer. Started at 8 minutes / km and sped up to 6:40 / km by the end.

Total "distance" covered was 3.2km. I just need to find a way to make it less soulless and dull.

In today's session, our party of elven bards tracked down a stolen lute, got into a fight with three vampiric glam rock band members, animated a large piece of sailcloth to help them in the fight, summoned multiple clouds of flying daggers, caused an enormous fireball at the gates of a desert city and then ran away with a prisoner to interrogate...

When I put it like that, it almost sounds silly.

Stress levels are up this morning, something is up with our kitchen electrics. We've tripped the circuit breaker a couple of times in the past few weeks.

Fortunately we have a friend who is a qualified electrician, who is coming over tomorrow during the day to take a look.

Fingers crossed it's something on the fuseboard / breaker end, and not something up with the wiring.

I'm running an "all bards" one shot this weekend, set in the dwarven city of Kassiter. Our party are all sixth-level elven bards, who are a musical act on a concert tour.

It's only a few days until their big performance at the Damukhet Sazzarin Stadium in Kassiter's upper city, but they've just discovered their musical instruments and other gear has been stolen by parties unknown.

They're going to have to go hunt down their gear, find those responsible, and all before the big show.

Hey folks - a few months ago I remember seeing a series of posts about Austrian supermarkets colluding to keep prices high, uncovered by web scraping and API use. I can't remember who posted it and Mastodon's search isn't helping.

There were some discussions around "greedflation" but that doesn't help much either.

Can anyone point me at the original post?

(edit: mystery solved, see comments!)

Benefits of - when my 8.30 conference call was cancelled at 8.20, I hadn't schlepped into the office for it...

Mildly frustrating instead of utterly exasperating.

Didn't mention it at the time, but yesterday - September 25th - was the 25th anniversary of a large solar flare event that I studied for my final year astrophysics degree. We used SOHO (Solar Heliospheric Observatory) data to look for statistical correlations between the shape/form of the flare and disturbances in Earth's magnetosphere.

Feels like a gazillion years ago. I'm not even sure if I'd understand my old work now. That's a weird feeling.

It took three weeks and four engineer visits but our washing machine is working again, thank heavens.

It took a long time because we have a ten year old machine and parts aren't routinely carried, had to be ordered. We've been doing a mixture of hand-washing clothes and using a friend's machine. It's been stressful...

I have to remember that Duolingo is teaching me American, as well as Spanish.

There was a sentence about having bread with jelly for breakfast and I was picturing a big wobbly dessert and thinking "is this a Latin American thing? How have I never heard of this?"

...and then I figured it out.

Jam.

A bit slower at this morning, official time of 31:24 but I'm sure I was 31:20 🤷‍♂️

PB still stands at 29:48, going to try some mid-week running again, I've slacked off a bit recently. Going to enjoy the bank holiday weekend first though!
