We passed through Hull very briefly on our way to the ferry last month on our way to the Netherlands, it felt right to go back for a closer look. I haven't spent much time in the city since my university days about 20 years ago. It's changed a fair bit since then!

Our local posts up event photos online, I'm in a few of them today and I look knackered in every single one 😂

Still, it wasn't bad this morning, got round in 31:37, which isn't great, but is still better than last week.

Hey folks, I have a question - is there an online marketplace where people can self-publish Witcher material? I don't see anything on DriveThruRPG beyond the official stuff, not sure if R Talsorian permit or encourage self-published stuff?

Seen via a post on discord - HiSense smart TV borks user's computer, bluetooth due to frankly insane UUID generation spamming the local network.

https://cohost.org/ghoulnoise/post/5286766-do-not-buy-hisense-t

This kind of thing is why I haven't bought a new TV, even though I want one and can afford one, I want a dumb one and this seems almost impossible. Even if I got one and didn't give it direct network access, I'm not sure I'd trust it not to sneak online using HDMI and connect via more trusted devices...

I'm closing back in on a sub 30 minute parkrun.

My first ever parkrun after finishing Couch 2 5K was sub 30, and here I am nearly 10 years later, trying to get back to what I once achieved so easily when I first started!

The combined joys of aging, HRT, injury and pneumonia :P

All that said, I've given myself a new goal! I'll get back under 30 again within 6 months! Hopefully sooner than that, but this gives me space for life to get in the way like it is want to do!

edchivers,
@edchivers@dice.camp avatar

@ada good luck Ada! I'm trying to get under 30 minutes again too. I managed it once last year but haven't since.

My first parkrun in 2019 was 44:31, I have never been athletic!

@edchivers@dice.camp avatar

Ran my 119th this morning, coming in at 30:15 which is my best time this year and my second best time ever.

Hitting my sub-30 PB last April was a fluke, one of those days when literally everything seemed to come right. I'm getting pretty consistently between 30-31 minutes now so hopefully it'll only be a matter of time before I break 30 minutes again.

I feel like I'm getting a lot better at pacing myself, which is really helping.

Attempting to clarify some long-running D&D debate here (not RESOLVE it, just clarify it):

https://levikornelsen.wordpress.com/2024/02/19/the-dd-playstyle-block/

edchivers,
@edchivers@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen huh.

Wouldn't have even thought about that before, or considered it worth arguing about because "obviously" there's way more to the game than mechanical stuff.

Am I old school?

edchivers,
@edchivers@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen I'd say it had too much nuance to codify as rules and procedures, and that conversational style is going to feel different at every table.

It can't be mechanised, but it's still an important part of the game. Honestly, I think it's the most important part of the game but that's just me.

I've had (rare) four or five hour long sessions of D&D where not a single die has been rolled, and those are always my favourite. It's the times when everyone has really gotten into it.

@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

It's amazing to see how much worse transphobia is in the UK compared to here in Australia.

For the last week or so, parkrun has been caught up in a new cycle by transphobes in the UK, who are pushing for the exclusion of trans folk from their gendered categories.

parkrun has, possibly as a response to this, simply removed performance data from their records. Names, gender and position are still there, but times, records, age grading are gone now. parkrun says this is to push the focus towards community sports and wellbeing, rather than focusing only on runners and competitive elements.

Somehow though, it took me a week to even become aware of it! the Australian parkrun communities have been talking about the removal of the stats, and what it means for their apps and their unofficial performance badges, but no one is talking about the transphobes.

I've been the face of parkrun Australia's trans inclusion for a few years now, so it says something that this whole thing can blow up in the UK without making waves here in Australia.

I don't know whether that's a good thing or not.

edchivers,
@edchivers@dice.camp avatar

@ada I remember reading a (very positive) piece about you on ABC (Australian not American) a few years back about how your coming out has inspired parkrun to make their events more inclusive, and I shared it on to friends here who really appreciated it. I wish we had more stories like that rather than all this current toxic nonsense.

Six months time, if we're lucky, it might have all blown over, but the damage will have been done :(

Today's session was helped out a lot by this four year old post on Reddit, where someone mapped out Cidaris and wrote up a whole bunch of NPCs and story hooks. Absolute gold.

Feeling quite "blarg" today, but wanted to share something that made me smile.

I found this last night, after thinking "I bet someone has done this", and you know the internet, it never fails to deliver.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A0Fr8S6xQ2Y

(but I wanted to share this for more than just a silly video, fun as that is).

edchivers,
@edchivers@dice.camp avatar

I watched the video, was amused by it and thought "androgynous-looking person plays guitar, fine" and then I spotted the comments.

Some discussion of the fact that the youtuber is a trans woman. I expected the usual dickbags in the comments (and there were some) but others being really supportive, which was nice to see.

Then I clocked the date on the video, as six years ago. I checked out some of her more recent videos and it was like a transition speedrun. Amazing to see, made me happy :)

Been a while since I posted on - sorry! - so let's talk about the Fox People.

Out in the woods, just east of the Temple of Healing, is a ruined stone arch, capped with a keystone inscribed with the eye of Ioun, goddess of knowledge and magic. On the other side of the arch is the remains of a mosaic floor, mostly covered with weeds and earth. In the area are small fox statues, all sat down, all looking at the temple arch.

edchivers,
@edchivers@dice.camp avatar

Nobody knows who put them there, but everyone knows that if you're exploring the woods and you find a little statue looking off in the distance, you'd do well to follow its gaze, as there's probably something interesting in that direction that the Fox People wanted to be found...

Had a strange moment earlier where I was scrolling through my mastodon timeline and someone was talking about the Tenderloin (TL) district of San Francisco, and I thought "ooh, I know where that is, it's between Ted Faro's tomb and the Sunwing nest on that ruined tower on the hill"...

edchivers,
@edchivers@dice.camp avatar

Also occurred to me that I've never yet read / seen a depiction of Denver, Colorado that wasn't post-apocalyptic. I'm sure it's a lovely place when it's not overgrown ruins overrun with giant robots, or a deserted wasteland after a plague has wiped out most of humanity.

@SJohnRoss your neck of the woods? I've never been further into the "Forbidden West" than New Jersey. Would like to see more of the US but not had the opportunity yet.

Hmm, I've missed a couple of days of - never mind. Time to post something new about the world.

Entatratashan

Entatratashan was the first node of the Builder Network to be discovered by adventurers. Four days south of the home valley, not far from the gnome village of Riverglade, Entatratashan is a white tower atop a sandstone bluff. Originally inactive, it came to life after a party from the home valley reactivated an arcane power facility overgrown by forest.

edchivers,
@edchivers@dice.camp avatar

Inside the tower is a large teleportation circle which lights up and activates when certain words are spoken in the Asteri language.

The circle is linked to another tower in snowy mountains far to the west, where Ikata fell from the sky (see link) https://dice.camp/@edchivers/111687307729920478

This is the Frostmaiden game ran by our DM, Rob. It had it all - flubbed stealth checks! failed intimidation checks! not rolling above a 5 to attack even though we had advantage!

It's a good job we have a sense of humour :)
