Saw some “red eft” in #NewHampshire today! Apparently they are the juvenile state of the Eastern Newt.
They are very cute and were fine with close-up photography… but produce tetrodotoxin!!

I am always conflicted when a form asks me about my “race”.

1. isn’t that a fake concept?
2. if you consider that it’s about your “origins” on a given number of generations, surely we don’t all keep track of this info? So it’s not accurate.
3. it’s probably always mixed anyway, but there’s rarely a “mixed” option.
4. shouldn’t we try to forget about where someone’s ancestors are from or what shade of skin color they have instead of pointing the finger at it?

On the other hand, I understand that most of these forms are looking at representation and knowing that might be useful… but shouldn’t we strive to make this parameter irrelevant anyway?

So here’s a poll, the answer to which depends on whether you consider yourself in a “race minority” (vs “majority”) in the current country you live in:

Do you think it’s good / useful to be asked about your race in polls?

Two #Coding questions, from restarting #Python after doing mostly Matlab for a while.

1. I really liked Tables in Matlab - what’s the best (fastest, simplest) equivalent of it in Python nowadays? #Pandas?

2. with Matlab you can use ‘webread’ to one-line load the contents of a public google spreadsheet, as a table - very cool! What’s the simplest equivalent in Python?

I finally uploaded my #twitter archive to a personal website, in this case using Github Pages!
I did it in a few minutes even though I have 0 knowledge of website creation (not counting the twitter archive download).

I recently re-watched #TheShining and wondered why I liked it so much in the first place… is this just bound to happen with all the movies I watched as a child / teenager? There is not much beyond the nostalgia? Please prevent me from re-watching #TheNeverendingStory then!

(The good thing is it doesn’t work with games: started replaying #DukeNukem3D and it’s as satisfying as it ever was)

How can I find the version of a module (say, psychopy) that relies on a specific version of a dependency (say, pyzmq between v18 and v20)? Oh, and install it within an existing conda environment.
