Trump has said FOUR times that he will withhold federal funding from schools that require vaccines. Not just COVID. ALL.

This is most schools. This is hitting me where I work. This will lead to children dead from measles. It's obvious, inevitable.

Someone on here said they just couldn't bear to vote for Biden to keep Trump from office since at least under Trump there were better masking rules.

I hope that person sees this.

Worse is worse.

edit: because I don't know measles from smallpox

We learned this the hard way: if you don't have anything tied to not getting vaccinated enough people will opt out out of vague notions about medical distrust, or just the inconvenience of getting it done, that you will have outbreaks.

Nearly all schools from Harvard to little community colleges simply won't let you teach or attend if you don't have the shots. It works.

When you have private schools without these rules ... that's where we've seen outbreaks. This is so simple. Come on.

that elephants purr!

"Stand near an elephant herd, and you may feel a strange vibration in your chest. That’s not your heart beating in terror because you’re, well, standing next to an elephant herd. Or at least that’s not all it is. It’s also a sign that the elephants are talking to one another. Elephants are famous for their trumpeting, of course, but they also produce rumbles pitched so low that humans can’t hear them, only feel them as a sort of physical buzzing. Exactly how elephants do this has been a mystery — and while solving that mystery is not of first-order importance in understanding and preserving this largest of land animals, it would add new insight into how a whole range of species vocalize."

“Students brave enough to risk their financial aid and scholarships are derided as childish rather than principled. And though they are educated to participate in civic life, as soon as these students exercise their First Amendment rights, they are told that protecting private property is a more pressing public concern. It’s as though some older adults simply can’t wrap their heads around the idea that college students, who are old enough to marry, have families and risk their lives for their country, are capable of having well thought-out principles.”

This morning.
Picture one: Who's this?
Picture two: Oh... Hello there...

Baby is out of the nest, finally.
However, while the picture is dark, its beak and eye are darker than if it had just come out, so I suspect it's been in and out of the nest for a few days probably (although, it's surprising I didn't notice it) or it just stayed in the nest longer than usual (maybe)

Baby crow has left the nest and his hanging out on a branch nearby.

In the US, some people call natural disasters "Acts of God." As they're usually the same ones who don't believe or don't care about the climate crisis, have they been wondering why God is so fucking mad at them these days?

Mini . The crazy winds of yesterday broke branches, destroyed the last remains of an old nest, and probably delayed baby crow making its first steps into a larger world, but no damage was done to family or their nest. I saw Mom and Dad briefly this morning, but this evening returning home, they were both standing on guard at each end of the park and baby was hanging out in the nest, quite visible now.

Enjoy (there are three pics here and one video next)

Interesting read on "Finding my leadership style" by Helen Walden. A personal reflection on being a PI, a Head of School with a side order of doing so as a woman.

Sorry, it's paywalled (and I have to say very difficult to access even with a subscription) but I enjoyed reading it.

There are two paths to success in modern academic science.

  1. Be the gatekeeper for access to funds/resources and dictate conditions favorable to your public image.

  2. Do good science with as few resources as possible and get lucky.

Can you guess which is more common?

DungeonUp fools you at first glance. It looks simple, but it hides a lot of depth. You might think it’s a rogue-like, but it’s actually a puzzle game.

I’ve had this game for almost 10 years and I keep coming back to it. It its core, it’s a dungeon crawling RPG. You know the drill. Level up, get better stats – which allows you to slay more powerful enemies, giving you access to more loot. If you’re familiar with Tower of the Sorceror or Crystal Adventure, then you know the drill.

But what makes this game so unique is its wholehearted commit to keys. There’s lots of doors you need to unlock and only so many keys. Run out of keys, you can’t proceed. Not only do you have to care about doors, you quickly discover that not all doors are the same. Yellow doors can only be opened with yellow keys, and blue doors can only be opened with blue keys.

The RPG and puzzle elements result in something that’s immensely challenging. Not only do you need to level up but you have to ask yourself if it’s worth levelling up since you have to manage your resources. Each time you reach a new floor in the dungeon, though, there’s a huge sense of accomplishment.

Graphically, DungeonUp is fairly simple and that’s because it was originally developed as a mobile game in 2014. That same year, though, it was ported to PC. It like the look – it’s cute little 2D pixel art graphics that fills me with glee.

The soundtrack tends to be repetitive but at least it’s catchy and doesn’t overstay it welcome.

I’ve tried to discover if developer Clewcat Games has made anything else. Sadly, this is the only game of theirs that I’ve found on Steam. It looks like they’ve moved all development over to Fortnite. I wish them the best but I have a special place in my heart for homespun indie games.

Thankfully, DungeonUp is cheap. At regular price, it’s C$5.69. However, it has a -75% discount, selling for C$1.42 on Steam.

This is definitely worth playing, and I’ve got hours of enjoyment out of DungeonUp.
