I've been using Linux since it was first practically available (early 90's), UNIX before that, a variety of other OSs including UNIX derived NeXTSTEP, and I can genuinely say that Windows has many advantages and continues to do so.

Whilst part of the advantage comes from being the primary OS (for games, 96.76% market share on Steam), some comes from its feature set.

Most programs which work continue to do so (I have a 25 year old game I made, for which the installer and game still work).

@dougbinks yeah i made some game in VB6 and DX7 like 20 years ago and it still boots fine once i install the VB6 runtime stuff

So one of the biggest businesses in the world that serves by far the most consumers in the non-smartphone computing department does something incredibly harmful and it seems like the main thing Linux users are picking up from this is "oh neat what a great new recruiting tool!"

To be clear, the fact that a company with the power Microsoft has thought Recall is an acceptable thing to create is harmful to you even if you personally use Linux because you still have to live in this world

@oblomov the majority of windows users who would even know about this would be competent to simply turn it off and then face little further threat from it, so switching to Linux doesn't really do anything for their own threat profile

Meanwhile it's vulnerable users who don't know and will not be reached by Linux recruiters or who simply can't switch who will be victimized by this

People who

  1. Know about Recall and the threat it poses
  2. Are competent enough to simply switch their whole ass operating system
  3. Are going to be in your sights as someone recruiting people to Linux

are almost certainly not in the group of people who will be be victimized by this new Recall feature anyway

@dave honestly i really wanna shrink one of my partitions so i can create room for a linux partition that i can use part time but last time i did that it took like an entire day to figure out how to do it safely and im way too overwhelmed to think about doing that let alone dual booting linux (even though now i know much more about using linux since i've been regularly using WSL)

i'm at home and i'm wearing a mask because it's hot and we need to air out the house to cool it, but there's also dangerous levels of sahara dust in the air (thanks climate change!)

but also and most importantly because i'm not a little baby who thinks wearing a mask is some horrible injustice

can someone count the number of unique bosses in SMW for me? minibosses count but a recurring boss with slightly different patterns is still just one boss (like boom boom in 3)

i'd do it but i have a headache and it feels hard

I can't be bothered to look up the facts about the windows 11 ai thing, but I'm genuinely baffled as to who wants this, as well as why they need special ai hardware to make a keylogger that also watches you look at porn or whatever else it is that people use computers for

question for : do you make the kind of games you also like to play? I did VN/RPGs mostly, a few card games, one first person adventure and some sports/strategy sims (but loong time ago). However the kind of game I play most are souls-like, though I can't make them for obvious reasons (too difficult to code).

remember when trump said if we just stop testing for covid it would go away as if by a miracle and everyone thought that was a scandalously stupid thing to say

on an entirely unrelated note since 3 weeks ago the CDC no longer requires hospitals to report covid hospitalizations and now biobot is no longer showing covid wastewater data for the US
