"You shouldn't make your income reliant on a social media service, you should use online spaces you own"

nobody visits a website unless they see the link on social media or on Google first and nobody is gonna Google for something they don't know exists, not in a way your blog or website will show up in search results ahead of websites full of SEO gaming cruft

don't give me that "it's harder" shit, its not harder, it is absolutely completely and utterly IMPOSSIBLE unless you start out already famous. You might as well be saying "don't make your income reliant on social media; simply starve to death instead"

A few high profile (white) mastodon accounts assert there is more harassment here for them than on Twitter and as someone who has almost 8k followers here and had 13k there I gotta say I'm absolutely baffled. I had to spend literal hours each week manually blocking scumbags who wanted me and or my followers dead on Twitter, and the only reason the abuse wasn't worse was that Twitter's algorithm buried most of my tweets so few people ever saw them

As a queer woman in gamedev with a large audience I got harassed by nazis basically every single time a tweet blew up. The only thing I can think would make such a big difference between the people complaining and me is that a lot of them were probably verified on Twitter? And maybe that came with some algorithm that protected them from abuse by hiding tweets?

I was never verified so if such a thing existed I never had the benefit of it, and let me tell you without it Twitter was awful if you had high numbers of followers. And I had half a million people blocked

love steam's new 30 day cooldown window where scheduling a regular periodic sale will screw you out of being able to discount in 3rd party events. so you either have to stop doing periodic cooldowns which will hurt your bottom line or just get randomly screwed out of 3rd party steam events which also hurts your bottom line

anyway that probably is going to cost us $1000 that we desperately needed cause we can't discount midboss for the roguelike celebration event. if you want to soften the blow a little i have a kofi here: https://ko-fi.com/sharkhugseniko

As someone who fully divested from twitter despite being reliant on it early in 2023 I'm here to tell you that you can, in fact, just not use twitter. You can go all in on mastodon. In fact, it'll probably make mastodon work better for you if you do

can't believe people keep saying they can use AI for code. out of morbid curiosity i've tried a couple times and i've never gotten anything usable out of it. feels like anything for which there isn't just a copy/pastable stack overflow answer it won't help with, and if there's an SO answer then you can literally just google it and copy and paste it. what is this code that people are writing with AI? i really wanna know

maybe i should mute bluesky because it's giving me anxiety. when elon took over twitter i was still coming down from a nervous breakdown caused by having to flee my home due to threat of fascism, during a plague. it was intensely unpleasant to try and rebuild elsewhere in record time, though i did because my very survival was at stake. it's only been 6 months since then and i was finally starting to feel a little bit secure and now people keep talking like mastodon is going to bleed out as bluesky takes over and motherfucker i can't go through all this shit 2 times in half a year. no. fuck off

im done. go be on bluesky, or nostr, or post, or whatever the fuck you want just stop talking about it to me, and dont expect to see me there because i like it here

For my birthday, I'd really like it if my beloved fedi could spread word far and wide of Kitsune Tails. It's a platformer with a heartwarming story featuring queer main characters and personal discoveries in classic SMB3 style. You can find trailer, screenshots, and wishlist links here: https://kitsunegames.com/kitsunetails

It's coming out this year and the team and I have been working hard on it for several years now. Most of the team is queer in some form so by boosting you'd not only be making me happy on my birthday, but supporting a bunch of queer creators making queer art as well

yuzu kitsune tails, a purple haired fox girl, picks up samurai armor in a tower that's rapidly filling with lava. she jumps away from the rising lava and sticks her spear in the wall, doing a dashing twirl to get on top of it. she walks off the spear and into a new scene, fighting a ghost fox with armor and spear. it stabs and she jumps over, but is caught by a follow up stab. the ghost fox over extends and its ghostly powers wane, giving yuzu a chance to bop on its head

The stuff going on with rust leadership pushing through a downgrade of keynote speaker to regular speaker at rustconf when the speaker in question was specifically invited to be the keynote speaker by the event really makes me reconsider finally trying to learn some rust. Like that is just so extraordinarily disrespectful that I'm stunned nobody was like "hey maybe we shouldn't screw over the guest we invited like that" at any point during that process

EDIT: some people seem very interested in coming up with reasons why it's fine to just ignore rust leadership being shitty here and this is baffling to me. I don't have to learn rust, my interest is purely academic. There are other languages I wanna learn where I dont have examples of leadership being exceptionally shitty. I could just go learn those instead of making excuses for why rust leadership's shitty behavior doesn't matter

Am I the only one worried about devs getting caught in false positives with the valve banning AI assets thing? Cause I seem to be the only one. I don't trust Valve farther than I can throw them so I'm not sure I trust them with this

Like I know people hate AI work but if that hatred leads you to say "yes I fully expect Valve to be accurate, fair and reasonable about this" then I think you may have let your hate carry you somewhere bad because Valve is not known for those things on the back end. If you don't believe me ask people who've had their external key capabilities stripped or games that have been branded as "adult games" even though they're not. Or ask devs who make porny games which exist in a superimposed quantum state of being allowed and being banned at the same time

"Just stop using YouTube instead of waging an ad blocker blocker war and use other services"

Okay. What services? Peertube? A network with an amount of traffic that is a rounding error compared to YouTube's and has no monetization strategy?

Nebula? The video streaming service that is invite only and which sources new talent to invite specifically from YouTube? The service that has set up a model where it is dependent on YouTube and can only really survive if YT is thriving?

Vimeo? The site that has sent creators of popular videos bills of thousands of dollars for "taking up too much bandwidth?"

Which video streaming service is viable for new and unknown video makers building an audience and established ones who do it for a living and everyone in between? You can't answer that question because no such service currently exists

Can I just say that as someone who generally finds it 10x easier to learn new things from a well executed video than from an article that I'm really tired of the category of posts that are basically "who wants to watch a video just give me text amirite lads lmao"

Me. It's me. I want to watch the fucking video, actually, thanks

Do Bethesda style open world games really even need a main plot and an ending of sorts? I gotta admit, even though I've played Oblivion, Skyrim, and more times than I can even count Morrowind, I've only finished a main quest in any of them once, and it was in Morrowind with a character so fully tricked out that it was trivial to stomp through the main quest to finally see what all the fuss with Dagoth Ur was about

Like. Would it actually detract from the experience at all if they just said "hey, here's a cool sandbox full of quests and places to explore, go nuts" and there wasn't a main quest?

Imagine selling a cheap game on itch.io made with unity and getting hit with a 20 cent per install fee on top of fixed PayPal fees. Not sure why anyone would put up with this shit https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/unity-to-start-charging-fee-pegged-to-game-installs

love how so many places are literally disallowing people from getting a booster now unless they're old, high risk, or work in medical settings

hell the netherlands won't even let you vaccinate healthy 12 and under anymore for covid

even though few people are even interested in boosters anymore, especially younger healthy people. so why disallow it? make it make sense

Idk man instead of constantly changing the rules in hospitals about whether or not masking is required and confusing the shit out of people why not just do the easy thing that protects patients and require them forever. Then nobody ever has to wonder or get confused. They can just be like "oh, going to the hospital, better bring a mask"

"Basically everyone has had covid"

No, actually. There have been enough covid infections that everyone could have had an infection. Plenty of people haven't had covid, while others have had it a stupid amount of time, and here's a poll to prove it

Have you had covid?

i'm convinced this is the primary reason people think C is hard

Showed my mother my poll results where 63% out of 1700 people who responded are limiting participation in public indoor activities due to covid. Her response was "well limiting is one thing but you guys don't go anywhere at all"

And I don't get how people do risk assessment because it's clearly not how I do it. If you recognize there's enough of a risk to limit some indoor activities, then that means public indoor activity is dangerous. If public indoor activity is dangerous then it makes no sense to pick and choose based on your emotions about the activity. Just cause I really wanna do something doesn't make it any safer!

Seems like perfectly consistent reasoning to me but I guess according to my mother I'm crazy for not letting my feelings dictate when I should ignore a clear and present danger
