Some great impostor syndrome going on today trying to wrap my head around recursive shadowcasting, but finally getting somewhere

A lot of features with the editor this week but the main triumph is now all of the map layers are compiled when the game starts and a player character is spawned at a specified origin point.

All locations game-wide are in world coordinates now, all buildings and dungeons in the entire game will be on the same coordinate system, no transitions!

I can't stress enough how important it is to have a central API for coordinate transformations.

Tile grid coords, pixel coords, internal buffer pixel, screen pixel, viewport, world, zoomed/unzoomed, you never want to just transform these in-line anywhere. Take the time to write functions for going between them all especially if you're making a something like a map editor.

I also use typedefs to help document what function signatures expect and return.

The new world map system is finally working 🤩

Rather than a rpg-make style system where maps are standalone, there is now a tree of map layers on a unified coordinate system.

Layers are relative to their parent, allowing easy repositioning, and most importantly layers will be able to be conditional to world state to change the world between runs.

This is all using live tile rendering magic from last year's quadtree travels.

The indie game and the three inspirations behind it!

1st photo: I dropped it and now there's C++ all over the floor.

2nd photo: a blurry figure and a cab driver without a shared language are enjoying a bag of tangerines during a long drive through a vast desert

3rd photo: a sleepless young woman standing on a train platform sees another world in the shadows, erased by the harsh light of day

4th photo: the procession of seasons. colors that cannot be remembered. an indistinct longing.

@aeva one of mine is "I am 12 and Shadowrun on the SNES is the most raw intense immense digital world capable of literally anything and I'm both in awe of and scared to death of it." but hard to put into a screenshot 😂

wow i wonder why so many people are getting sick and chronically ill now and why so many kids are missing so much school. couldn't possibly be the disabling plague that we've collectively decided is no biggie despite all scientific evidence to the contrary

My close friend just got their Steam page approved for the game they've been putting nights and weekends into for over 8 years!

I think it's a truly special game, with great puzzles and an absurd amount of hidden content to discover. It has a cute artstyle and a banger original soundtrack.

Wishlist today to appease the steam algorithm and tell your friends!!

Boosts greatly appreciated!!

The audio channels were wrong in my theatre showing of Dune 2 for the first hour so you couldnt hear what anyone was saying and they didn't fade the house lights all the way down so you couldnt see what was happening in dark scenes and my brain was wracked with rage through the whole experience but other than all of that the movie seemed pretty good!

@vga256 lol, yeah the opening sequence with the worm in the Deni V sci-fi BWOMM extravaganza had a whimper of sound.... huge disappointment

Maybe I don't have all the information but my gut feeling is that there's a lot of rush to blame the Boeing stuff on bad engineering and bad programming instead of on a systemic rot stemming from decades of executive and managerial malfeasance

there was a thread going around about like 'oh look they stored number of planes in a float wtf are they even doing over there' as though optimization and sensibility in data structure has anything at all to do with what an international billionaire company produces

britown,
@britown@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

bad products ship because the people writing the paychecks told the people making the product not to fix it

(this is getting boosted so i'd like to add that this is part 3 of a thread)

I can't really hate palworld, regardless of the content. 3D, physics, multiplayer, decent performance, a nice presentation, nice UI, giant world clearly a ton of people enjoy running around in.

Tick any two of those boxes and I'm pretty much out. Video games are very hard to make, even the ones accused of being low-effort, soulless, or uncreative.

The primordial soup of assets and mechanics sloshing around the steam cistern produces new popular things regularly.

britown,
@britown@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

people are dunking on the devs for a bunch of reasons, and sure, w/e, but this idea that everything in the marketplace should have purity of heart and vision is very silly to me.

Go watch the Rare Replay documentaries where people from the beloved studio just talk openly about chasing popular characters to rip off for their games.
