Trying to find people I relate to on Mastodon. Please boost if you:

-want to say y'all but do not because you are not a southerner and it would feel inauthentic.

-once saw a psychic who told you that you will die in a Jimmy Fallon-related incident.

-think that cops should give you a chance to get out of a speeding ticket if you can make them laugh.

-poke the ground in front of you with a stick before each step to make sure it is not quicksand.

erazmus,

@lowqualityfacts quicksand? It’s the lava you have to worry about.

With the memory board sent to the fab it's time for the most exciting part of the project: the processor board.

This is A3 sized and houses 117 ICs. I'll be adding as many blinkenlights as I can fit.

I intend to toot as much as I can about the design process. I think it should be ... ahem ... interesting.

But it won't be quick. I'll be fitting it around other projects, and it'll be a ton of work anyway.

erazmus,

@bread80 Is it just me, or does anyone else get a tingle of excitement gazing at this and looking forward to several hours of the Zen of routing this board, and turning chaos into order?

I bought a tape deck today. At the weekend I will live-toot a teardown and try to see if I can get it working.

Spoiler - there is no Z80 in it

Spoiler 2 - a quick Google shows almost no information about it, and I have no experience of aviation equipment, so getting it working is unlikely.

Rear view showing all kinds of connectors, including a huge round 50 pin connector
A peek in to the inside of the rugged rack mmount tape deck showing 5 cards full of electronics mounted on a backplane

erazmus,

@rc2014 there’s no Z80 in it yet

I've heard a lot of people like Ceph clustered storage. And Arm SoC cluster boards.

So I'm excited to start testing this special bit of kit from Ambedded... video hopefully in August! What kind of things would you like to know about it?

erazmus,

@geerlingguy What do I want to know about it? Why is it purple? :)

erazmus,

@geerlingguy But more seriously, does it interoperate with Proxmox's ceph implementation?

So now that there's very little genuine innovation in smartphone tech from year to year, it's obvious why Apple has hinged their entire iPhone advertising campaign on people lusting over titanium. Presumably Apple will now switch to a different elemental metal or alloy each year to try boost sales again.

erazmus,

@lauren can’t wait for the lead version.

I am still extremely (f)unemployed on my 50th birthday, so... time to remind myself why I'm still fighting. My career may be dead, but I'm not. Gotta find something to help fund my Star Wars collection! Took the family to Disneyland this week. Flew the Millennium Falcon this morning, here. Zero regrets.

erazmus,

@ChrisPirillo Nice park job :)

Redesigned the breakaway segments, so that there's no traces crossing the breaks. Instead, it's assumed you'll break them apart and wire them together using the edge fingers, to which you can solder wires or a 2x6 pin header. The wiring on both sides is identical, so you need only solder one side if you use wires.

erazmus,

@mos_8502 Are all four DIPs oriented differently? That's evil 😈

erazmus,

@mos_8502 Chef kiss!

One of my friends gave me a random PoE Ethernet switch he found in an e-waste bin for my birthday.

The four dip switches just evoke more and more questions the longer you think about it, and the datasheet yielded practically zero additional insight on what the switches actually DO. 🤔

erazmus,

@kwf Damn it! I woke up in the middle of the night last night and I was THINKING ABOUT THIS SWITCH! This cursed object should not be able to reach through the Internet and affect my sleep!

erazmus,

@kwf truly wtf.

Okay, following my quick "I'll try coding for CP/M" lark today, I've come up a couple of routines to quickly learn some asm coding for CP/M and to play with my Bus Interfaces for connecting RC2014 modules to the SAM Coupe and ZX Spectrum.

It's really just proof of concept stuff which I'll look at in this thread...

ZX Spectrum - RC2014 Bus Interface. 2 slots for RC cards, available with or without a ZX Spectrum edge connector.

erazmus,

@quazarsamcoupe I just see an empty desk :) actually I’m just jealous.

erazmus,

@quazarsamcoupe Here it is - PROOF that the Sam Coupe is a made-up computer. A Mastodon post supposedly showing it operate, but it's not actually shown :)

The survey team has preliminarily determined the likely cause of the Sol 3 ["Terra"/"Earth"] (Galactic Index: 4940392-392392-140392-292) extinction event, which we estimate occurred approximately 24000 planetary orbits ago, between our scheduled and surveys of the sector.

Records extracted from a storage facility deep in a natural mine strongly suggest that a global "DNS" failure triggered the planetary extinction over a period of no more than 30 revolutions of the planet.

Unfortunately, we do not yet know more specifics about "DNS", and are operating under the assumption it had some reference to nuclear or biological warfare agents.

We are continuing to analyze the retrieved data. This is a slow process however, even using the galactic central computplex, since the data is heavily biased with trillions of photo and video images of the ruling species of the planet, which called itself a "Meow".

We will keep the survey office updated of course. - Bylex-Tomol-Zolum-Blub-090-03190-S

erazmus,

@lauren It's always DNS
