I'm an attorney (Iowa and Illinois) who also has a BS in computer science and an MS in cybersecurity. My hobbies include aviation, ham radio, running, kayaking, cycling (road & mountain), martial arts (grappling & striking), shooting, and technology. I'm trying to reduce my use of facebook & twitter. I care deeply about ending police brutality and racism, digital privacy, and addressing the climate crisis. #fedi22 #privacy #BLM #science #technology #aviation #atheist

I was on the fence about going for a run after work due to the weather, but I’m glad I did. A young deer was playing in a puddle, and it was adorable.

I’m fortunate to have a good friend from Afghanistan. He and his family gifted my family a delicious dinner. Even my children, who are often picky eaters, loved it. That meal was such a nice end to the day.

I believe that I have discovered a new form of ice, that is denser than osmium, harder than chromium, and quite abundant. It can be found at the base of my driveway, right where the snowplow deposited it.

As far as I can tell, the greatest tragedy is that human lifespans are so short compared to all the knowledge, joy, and humor there is to experience. Even 100 years is not enough to scratch the surface.

Yet there are people in the world who are so dull that they squander their lives on bigotry, and who think the pinnacle of humor is demeaning marginalized people. I truly don't get it, and in a way I'm glad that I don't get it.

Thanks to a 50 Cent song from 20 years ago, I felt compelled to reminded my children that their chinchillas would have been cheaper to buy in the summer.

FYI: The market (as defined by my 9 and 12 year olds) values 1 Carmelo segment as being equal to 1 fun size sour patch kids packet.

https://www.npr.org/2023/10/26/1208603609/confederate-general-robert-e-lee-monument-melted-down-charlottesville-virginia The massive bronze sculpture of Confederate Traitor and Enslaver Robert E. Lee, in uniform, stood in a downtown Charlottesville park for nearly a century. It was at the center of a deadly white nationalist rally in 2017, when Neo-Nazis and white supremacists tried to stop the city's plans to remove the statue. It has now been melted down.

My 9 year old had an ST Math level dealing with prime numbers, and he needed a little help. We talked about how exciting prime numbers (and discrete logarithms) are, and how important they are in computer security. That made my evening.

A year ago today, a friend of mine took his own life. Outwardly things seemed fine. He had just sent me a picture of him and his wife kayaking at a state park, with beautiful scenery all around. When we got together for martial arts he always appeared happy and well balanced. But internally he was struggling with profound sadness and despair. I wish I had known. I wish he knew how much we all miss him, and how his absence diminishes the world.

Leo had early release from school, so we went on a tour of the Scott County jail and courthouse. Then we went flying in our Archer. It was a good afternoon.

Today was the Taming of the Slough triathlon (kayaking, mountain biking, and running) by River Action Quad Cities. I had a wonderful time and got a personal record, even though I crashed my mountain bike a little bit and lost about 30 seconds of time dealing with that 😂.

DNA Database Proves Leonard Mack’s Innocence After 47 Years of Wrongful Conviction:
Unreliable witness identifications along with racial bias and tunnel vision led to Mr. Mack’s wrongful conviction, the longest to be vacated based on DNA evidence. https://innocenceproject.org/news/hit-in-dna-database-proves-leonard-macks-innocence-after-47-years-of-wrongful-conviction/

Today, a court in Iowa wrongfully issued a warrant for the arrest of a client of mine. The supposed basis for this warrant was a failure on the part of the client to show up to serve a previously-scheduled jail sentence. The client didn't fail to show up to jail, as their case was resolved without them being sentenced to jail. So, this is all just the result of carelessness on the part of a judge and others at the courthouse.
