@evan I mean, there seems to be parallels with Vietnam, where we accepted a lot of Vietnamese immigrants displaced by our foreign policy (also Afghanistan?).
I don't know that I'd want to immigrate to a country bearing responsibility for destroying my home, but I think we're obligated to accept them if they do.
One very cool, very normal thing that non-war-criminals do is threaten collective punishment in retaliation for potential indictments on human rights violations
Another cool normal thing that happens in lots of modern democracies is when a senior cabinet minister threatens to bring down the government unless it commits genocide.
@wa7iut Good question! I don't remember any operations to take them out, but memory is faulty. And I might not have had them when I was born. I'm still well over 95% sure they're still in here.
One part of the university encampment shutdowns that is upsetting to me is that the vast majority of Americans -- about 2/3 -- disapprove of Israel's actions in Gaza.
@DavidBHimself sure. I'd guess that university officials lean Democrat (77% in favour of a ceasefire) and police probably lean Republican (56% pro ceasefire).
I just dropped my Summer 2024 semester class for #OMSCS so I can concentrate on the Summer of Protocols grant for adding E2EE to ActivityPub. I'm pretty bummed; this is my second semester in a row that I've had to drop out. But I just can't hold down a day job, work a full-time role on the grant, and do graduate school classes. It's just too much.
Very happy to announce that @tomcoates and I have been given a #SummerOfProtocols grant to develop an end-to-end encryption (E2EE) protocol for #ActivityPub DMs, including a reference implementation and a report to submit to the W3C SocialCG.
So, I'm the first three, but my main account is on CoSocial.ca, a cooperative membership organization. I would love to see more people involved with instances where they have a stronger sense of connection -- household, workplace, civil society. But I think we also have to think about how to have a healthy fediverse with low-affinity account servers.
