In this episode I learned:

• Indomie probably only exists because Suharto kicked out Sukarno, and needed food to feed the hungry rice-eating country
• they didn’t like bread or bulgur (called bulgur ‘horse feed’)
• the wheat brought to Indonesia was used to make instant noodles
• the rest is history: Indomie, noodles with Indonesian spices, is a ‘religion’

The best nasi lemak are the ones that fit in your palm. If it's too big, it's just too much of a good thing. We have a Malay word for that - "muak". But this fist sized nasi lemak is just the right amount.
I wanted to tell the makcik selling it to up the price from RM1 to RM2, however. But I made sure to buy her kuih and lauk to make it better.

Being home means breakfast that makes sense to me. (I don’t need to hear about how you can’t imagine eating such a thing, I can’t imagine eating donuts, cereals and fruit for breakfast either! Team savory and spicy breakfast forever)

My all time favorite laksa store in Singapore is Wei Yi in Tanglin Halt. In the Bay Area, Noodle Station in Daly City does one that is very similar (better than the Singaporean and Malaysian Bay Area places doing laksa)

The changing face of hawker centres: reflecting our changing demographics.

At Whampoa Market, excellent scallion pancakes (S$1.80) and dumplings (S$5), so US$5 in all.

Next door, good pho. We didn’t have northern Chinese or Vietnamese food in hawker centres when I was a kid. There are even hawkers from Japan and Korea too; and also regional Japanese food (there’s an excellent Okinawa hawker stall somewhere on the island..)
