They say real estate is a good investment, but that's only really true if you don't have to live in it. If you sell your price increased house, you still need a different price increased place to live.
If you have a second investment property, you can sell it and keep the money.
I'm starting to think that rising house prices mainly benefit the people giving out housing loans, by making them larger.

Oh boy. I can now say there is a new family of noise textures dropping at i3d in a month that is higher quality than spatiotemporal blue noise, generalizes to arbitrary spatial and temporal filters, and we show significant benefit under motion/disoclusion with temporal filtering/reprojection for real time.
It was a collaborative effort between the 4 of us, but William Donnelly really knocked it out of the park, deriving a well motivated loss function, making it possible.
More details to come!

Available now, Application Specific Arithmetic, the "ASA" book. If you do arithmetic on FPGA this book perfectly complements the ASIC-focused "Digital Arithmetic" by Ercegovac, describing methods and hacks that work well for FPGA. Sometimes all you need are a series of lookup tables.

Been debugging boids & behavior combinations all evening! Happy to say, I think all force contributions are fixed now (classic off-by-one error was leading to an initially subtle but increasingly obvious directional bias), and I can focus again on experimenting with some new amazing emergent behaviors... Aside from that, maybe this also qualifies for (Day 1: Particles)?!

Btw. This is just a variation of this example project:

https://demo.thi.ng/umbrella/boid-basics/

...which was created as part of last year's series:

Just received my second payment from the "High Tech Employee Antitrust Litigation" case, a hefty $3.11 out of the $415m raised from Apple, Google, Intel, Adobe, Lucasfilm and Pixar in order to settle the case and publicly demonstrate that they did nothing wrong under the law while colluding not to hire each others employees. Just so we are clear, nothing illegal happened.

Does anybody know what the current usable state-of-the-art method of converting an unsigned integer multiply by constant is? I'd imagine it's not still a variant Bernstein.

fatlimey,

fatlimey, (edited )
@fatlimey@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mbr @amonakov Have a look at "minimal adder" SCM solutions as tables of weights and shifts:

Oscar Gustafsson, Andrew G. Dempster, and Lars Wanhammar. “Extended Results for Minimum-Adder Constant Integer Multipliers”, International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS). IEEE, 2002, pp. 73–76

Or if you're on FPGA using KCM tables are cheap and easy:

Michael J. Wirthlin. “Constant Coefficient Multiplication Using Look-Up Tables”, Journal of VLSI Signal Processing 36.1
(2004), pp. 7–15

Why oh God why does the microwave thing that the handle is a resonating antenna and the handle is by far the hottest part of the mug?
Time for a redesign!

@demofox it's because your ceramic is not well sealed by the glaze and has allowed moisture to enter it (probably through the bottom ring). This is the thing that fine porcelain is designed to prevent.

I struggle to articulate it, but something I really dig about post-Twitter-world is: I just do not know about every single game that comes out, or books/movies/etc.

I still have channels that float up some good lil stuffs, but I can be surprised by media again! I can appreciate mid games because I didn't watch influencers rag on them for 3 weeks.

I feel like I'm forming my own opinions again. Which makes me double take all, um, wait how long had Twitter been feeding me my opinions. Shit. Well that's not good.

fatlimey,
@fatlimey@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg It's proper Gibsonian cyberpunk with unexplained tech, body-mod, inner city sleaze, trans-machine racism, "the street finds it's own uses uses...", etc. Just a great movie.

what git jargon do you find confusing? thinking of writing a blog post that explains some of git's weirder terminology: "detached HEAD state”, "fast-forward", "index/staging area/staged", “ahead of 'origin/main' by 1 commit”, etc

(really only looking for terms that you personally find confusing, not terms that you think someone else might be confused about)

fatlimey,
@fatlimey@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@b0rk Using the words "reflog" and "rebase" like they provide some kind of meaning in a sentence. Never defined "base" in the first place now you want to "re-base" something?

a while ago i devised a sort of embryonic datatype comprised of blobs (vector of bytes) and cells (tuple of blobs and/or cells).

but yesterday, just as i was going to sleep i realized: i can even remove that last duality and merge both types into one "ordered struct": a bunch of bytes followed by a vector of pointers. this datatype can represent any other specialized storage type that we know.
