Or, as Americans are so fond of saying: "Yippie Kay Yay, Motherfckrs!"

@ParadeGrotesque
To be fair, it was only ever one American, John McClane (Bruce Willis).

Also, I have no idea what the first bit means.

@ParadeGrotesque
I agree with this article:
"no one really knows what it means at all."

Yipee is fairly common in English, although perhaps a little dated these days. I understand it as an expression of excitement or joy.

Ki-Yay, on the other hand, is meaningless, to me. I think they are non-lexical vocables introduced by, as stated in the article, by Bing Crosby.

@ParadeGrotesque
Many a true word spoken in jest. The phrase probably does have that meaning now, as the movie quote is so famous.

You just know the next time you are trapped in a multi-storey building with some German psychopath terrorists this is the first phrase that will come to mind.

Petition to change distance units in road transport in the UK from miles to km.

It won't work, but sometimes these tiny displays of defiance perform a wider function and makes me feel more European.

My only misgiving is that "The Road and The Kilometres to Dundee" doesn't have the same ring about it. 😃

@edavies
It's a mess. I have seen new road signs some with "m" and some with "yds". How many standards are there?

Parking lot rage

Parked the car at the retail park, and then took for a walk. When we returned a car was parking next to our car. However, it parked on the white line nearest to our car.

There wasn't enough room to even get in the sliding door. Gruoch and I both glowered at the driver of the other car as she was leaving. This was enough for her to realise what she had done. She got back in her car, and parked properly this time. 😃

Hearing protection when working with loud tools - what do you use?

Are these auto-muting ones good? They seem like a good idea, but how is it in practice?

My problem with hearing protection is that tool use is intermittent but I don't want to be deaf and oblivious the whole time. Nor constantly pull them on and off (or worse, in and out).

I have a Stihl helmet, with attached ear defenders. The ear defenders are very effective, and can be swivelled round to sit on the helmet, when their use isn't required.

That would be enough. The Irish passport entitlement stops at grandparents (at least, that is how it worked last time I checked).

fitheach, to tea
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

Here's an idea for all you tea drinkers. When we ordered a pot of tea in the café, they brought this three part tea timer. The different coloured sand timers are marked "weak", "medium", and "strong". When your colour of sand runs out it is time to remove the tea bag.😃

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

@XiongShui
The café served their tea in a dark blue teapot, so, seeing the tea colour wasn't possible. I guess the timer also acted as a reminder to take the tea bag out, and not leave it in.

The timer was just a novelty, but, a fun idea.

BTW
I don't drink tea, at all. 😃

When in Perth (see previous posts), we visited the Brew Dog pub on George Street. Never again.

Firstly, the default for ordering food is scanning a QR code on the table, and then entering your order via a web app.

Secondly, the pub doesn't accept cash, only credit cards. This only became clear to me when we wanted to pay.

Do they purposely go out of their way to make it difficult for the customers?

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

The pub did have one saving grace: they were dog-friendly. I only realised this when we sat at a table next to the gallery of canine customers.

A close-up view of some of the gallery photos.
