Due to some frustration flight shenanigans I ended up with most of the today alone in Milan and an evening tonight alone in Rome

Any recommendations on what to do or where to eat? I already saw the Duomo yesterday

fmarini,
@fmarini@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman Damn, I have a busy day today, otherwise I would’ve shown you around.
Anyway, unfortunately not the best day weather-wise, but here are some ideas (gonna provide addresses later):

  • take a stroll in an around the Castello Sforzesco, Sempione park, and Arco della Pace. From there you can go to Chinatown and Via Paolo Sarpi, if you feel like it
  • go to Basilica of San Lorenzo, then walk along Corso di Porta Ticinese, reach the Darsena, and then stroll along the Naviglio Grande
fmarini,
@fmarini@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman if you go the first route, you can have something to eat in via Sarpi, there are quite a number of street food places there, offering anything from dumplings to fried skewers to baos. I suggest trying the mo at Mo Sarpi. There are some Italian places too, if you want.
Otherwise, from the Castello you can go to via Mercato and Corso Garibaldi, there are a lot of places there to eat, La Prosciutteria being a nice one for a tagliere with a glass of wine.

fmarini,
@fmarini@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman For the second route, along Corso di Porta Ticinese stop by the Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio, then beside the Darsena there is a covered market with some places to eat. Otherwise along the Naviglio Grande you can find plenty of different places ranging from another La Prosciutteria to greek food, to whatever you might like. On the other side of the Naviglio there is a really good but somewhat expensive restaurant, El Brelin.

fmarini,
@fmarini@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman For the first route, begin from Piazza Cairoli (there is an underground stop there, if you need it), and go straight toward the Castello Sforzesco. Apart from the museums in there, everything else is free and you can walk inside and around the castle. If you exit the castle on the other side to Piazza Cairoli, you’ll find yourself in the Sempione park, go through it, and you’ll reach the Arco della Pace.

fmarini,
@fmarini@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman good! Happy you enjoyed Castello Sforzesco and the time here ☺️👍🏻

Did you know Apple removes WWDC talks over time from the Developer app? I was very surprised how many removed talks still have their video streams hosted by Apple!

Here's an overview of the availability of all WWDC talks ever. We figured this out while building WWDC Index, an overview of every WWDC talk ever held: https://nonstrict.eu/wwdcindex

fmarini,
@fmarini@mastodon.social avatar

@mathijskadijk is there some kind of internet archive/wayback machine for WWDC talks?
Never really thought about it, and I somehow expected Apple to provide all the old ones and keep such an archive, but I’m now wondering…

fmarini,
@fmarini@mastodon.social avatar

@mathijskadijk I wonder if Apple would come after anyone hosting those offline ones for everyone else to access… not sure I’m willing to find out firsthand, though 😅

Anyway, thanks a lot for the work you’re doing with the Index! 👏🏻☺️👍🏻

    We don't spend enough time talking about the quality of water for your coffee and espresso at CoffeeGeek; it's my fault, because a) we have really good water in Victoria for coffee straight from the tap, and b) I have an under-the-sink commercial water filtration kit for coffee.

    Well, I'm changing that. We're going to be reviewing water filtration kits designed for coffee soon. First up is BWT's innovative kits. Like this retro-grade kit for espresso machine reservoirs.

    fmarini,
    @fmarini@mastodon.social avatar

    @cliophate @vmachiel @apollon @rileytestut nope, apps can be distributed through more than one store, it’s up to the developer.
    They still have to pay the CTF, though, so a free app in the rest of the world would probably be paid (even if only 1€) in the EU App Store.

    https://developer.apple.com/documentation/appdistribution/distributing-your-app-on-an-alternative-marketplace

    Afaik, you can even have an iPad only version in the App Store, and an iPhone one in an alternate store, I think…

    I continue to be amused by US drivers’ inability to negotiate roundabouts, even with plentiful signage and concrete dividers between lanes, which they apparently think should be driven over.

    I think this three-lane roundabout’s design is pretty solid (not least of which is because it prevents people doing continuous donuts around it). I think locals need time to figure it out (yes it’s been a year, yes people are slow learners), then crashes will go down. If not, maybe they can install taller lane dividers or something to prevent people crossing the barriers.

    But man, US drivers and roundabouts 😄

    “First data on South Bay’s new turbo roundabout are in — with surprising results. Is it really safer?”

    “my guess? Apple doesn’t want to allow loading of roms from external sources.
    They’re fine with official Nintendo/Sony/whatever emulators with a number of licensed roms included, but no way they’re gonna approve “open” emulators.
    GBA4iOS approval has probably been the latest error in the review process, and as soon as the higher ups noticed, they removed it, simple as that.”

    So iGBA has now been removed from the App Store. The question is: why? Could be all sorts of reasons. Which is fun, because that means we still don’t know what Apple’s actual stance on emulation happens to be.

    In the last few days I’ve seen a number of posts from very good iOS devs looking for job and apparently not able to find any…

    And now I’m like “if they aren’t able to find a job, how the hell will I be able to, given that I don’t feel like I’m even in the same league?”, and that’s making depression rearing its ugly head again, which is not good and making me feel uneasy…

    Meh.

    To clarify:
    on one hand, I know I’m good enough as a dev.
    On the other hand, I have terrible memory, and I keep looking even for very simple things, or I use weekly, and with the kind of interview process most places have, I fell like I wouldn’t be able to even get to the point where I could demonstrate I know my way around code and iOS in particular. Not a fun feeling.

    Without getting into the right or wrongs in the DMA and Apple/Google/Meta/etc’s implementations, there is one thing that strikes me as absolutely wrong on EU’s part.

    Law gets discussed, written, and passed, with basically no interaction with the affected companies, and apparently no way for them to submit a compliance plan to be checked and approved/rejected. Co.s present their compliance once the law is in effect, and only after that EU launches an
