fwilhe,
@fwilhe@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jwildeboer Richtig.

Is it somewhere documented how the source tree for is maintained? It seems to be happening completely on Github, which sounds weird when comparing to the upstream development process. How do they pull updates into the branches?

fwilhe,
@fwilhe@social.tchncs.de avatar

@kernellogger Yes, I'm aware of Linus' and Greg's Linux mirror on Github, but they are read only as far as I understand, so no PR merged there. What I'm wondering is how it makes sense to maintain stable branches on Github which will probably introduce merge conflicts with the upstream stable branches.

I'm not familiar with maintaining a project that's not completely hosted on Github, so maybe it's easier than I'm assuming. I would be interested to see a documentation of how they do it.

I've been an advocate for 'one sentence per line' in text files for a long time. Nice way to describe the reasoning. Does not matter if you're using markdown or asciidoc for that. https://github.com/opencontainers/image-spec#markdown-style

@Migueldeicaza This is a great talk even if you know nothing about godot. You make me want to try swift for linux/cloud development.

Booked my and shots for tomorrow. Let's see if the pharmacy gives me both at the same time :) In case you also live in , have German health insurance and also want to get your shots: I booked at Saniplus in Riem via https://apotheken.com/impfen.html

fwilhe,
@fwilhe@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jwildeboer I really don't get why doctors are so hesitant with that. I got lucky with my Hausarzt, but overall I think we would be better off with higher vaccination rates. Would be great if vaccination was a standard feature at any (larger) pharmacy in Germany.

fwilhe,
@fwilhe@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jwildeboer Sure, I'd love to see the trade off calculation with more flu/covid shots compared to the number of sick days without those shots expressed in euros. I can't image vaccination is more expensive (for flu/covid specifically).

fwilhe,
@fwilhe@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jwildeboer Do you know about how other (European) countries handle this? Anyone can get vaccinated at pharmacies without arguing?

Best FOSS option I currently know to get reproducible dev environments in cases where containers don't cut it (like in my case).

I'm not a game developer but I think the current situation is a great case for community built platforms such as . Investing time to learn and build upon non-free software makes one dependent on a single vendor.

The witeout rewrite is such a great project. I never had a play station and I never played the original wipeout, but the fact that I can compile and play it on my linux laptop so flawlessly feels like magic. Imagine if it was the norm for ~20 year old games to be source-available (legally). How greatly they could be enhanced. But Nintendo is rather going to sell Super Mario for the SNES on each new console generation..

So.. by uploading a complied linux kernel to a public web address, do I violate the GPL? I just need a place to store a kernel to download in a script, nothing commercial, just out of curiosity.. The kernel has no code of my own, it's just built using buildroot.

Well thank you, , if only I had software to do that..

The python supply chain system still confuses me. I can install it via pip or via dnf and apt (package name seems the same in and ).

What is the recommended solution? I guess pip installs are considered bad practice outside of virtual envs..

It came to my mind today that maybe https://github.com/lima-vm/lima can replace some of my use-cases. Sure, it does not have the same focus, but since I anyway had been using vagrant with libvirt (no vmware or vbox), it's running qemu anyway. Getting a basic box running seems easy enough, but the lima cli seems a bit counter intuitive to me. Difference seems to be that vagrant has more rules on how the box is built while lima seems to use cloud-init for user setup. Less lock-in, I guess.

Has anyone of you done a performance comparison between Restic with SFTP backend and S3 backend?

My guess would be that S3 is significantly faster.... :thaenkin:

fwilhe,

@thomas you mean both with the same storage provider?

fwilhe,

@thomas no, I'm only using the B2 backed but consider switching to the S3, but honestly my diffs are so small that I don't notice performance anyway..

Any insights how #fedora and #debian will handle the license change in #vagrant? I don't hope they would include BSL code in the distro, so… freeze the version of vagrant before the license change? Any prominent OSS fork already? #opensource #osi #license #freesoftware
