Western Music Isn't What You Think

I don't know enough to agree or disagree with this, but either way it's fascinating.

@stevefoerster @classicalmusic Two degrees in music (admittedly they’re in conducting and not history or musicology). This looks quite legitimate and worthy of study. Thanks for posting this.

This week, I learned all about audiobook narration from David H. Lawrence, a professional actor and audiobook narrator who helps authors narrate their own books.

If you've ever dreamed of being a narrator — or wondered what it's like — this episode is for you!

Student: When does spring break start?

Me: Next Friday.

Student: When do we come back?

Me: April 8th.

Student: That's a long time to have off.

Me: Yeah, it's a pretty good break.

Student: I didn't mean it like that.

Me: How did you mean it?

Student: (quietly) Would it be possible for me to bring snacks home for me and my brother?

Me: Of course! We'll pack up all your favorites!

Me: (remembering not everyone looks forward to school breaks) We'll pack up your brother's favorites too.

We've known forever that Apple works with Google (by taking $10+ billion per year) to be the default search engine on iPhones and to help flesh out Spotlight/Siri search results, but today people are shocked by a rumor that Apple would consider a deal with Google to enhance their AI offerings...

If true, I bet Apple has their own LLM tools for local and personal stuff, and Gemini is harnessed in some way for web related requests.

gdp,
@gdp@social.lol avatar

@matt Other way around. Google pays Apple.

I’ve been testing for the last week or so (yes I know about the Brave drama, but I don't want to go there).

So far I'm impressed with the results and I'm considering subscribing. But they had an outage yesterday which lasted HOURS, and because their extension basically intercepts and redirect any search traffic, I couldn't just visit DDG and search. I had to disable the ext first (which is a pain in Safari).

This has me questioning whether a fledgling search engine is the right choice…

gdp,
@gdp@social.lol avatar

@kev That was the first time I’ve noticed a Kagi outage so I’m hoping it was a one-off. As for the Brave drama, DDG is in the same boat, so there really is no drama (or there’s unavoidable drama all around) if you ask me.

Weather is supposed to be severe today, and more than half of the school districts in the state have transitioned to an e-learning day. That makes me worry for students in schools like mine. Eighty percent of our students would be safer in school, but there’s no safe way to get them there.

gdp,
@gdp@social.lol avatar

@Saltssaltgirl I’m in the Midlands of South Carolina. Eighty percent of the students in my district live in single wide mobile homes. We could actually probably get them to school but then we wouldn’t be able to get them home later. Winds will be too high to put buses on the road.

gdp,
@gdp@social.lol avatar

@Saltssaltgirl I’ve thought that many times in similar situations. We have more of these types of e-learning days now than snow or ice days.

gdp,
@gdp@social.lol avatar

@Saltssaltgirl Most of our students do have internet at home. But they have five school days to submit the work for both attendance and grading purposes. So there’s grace built into the system in case there are power outages or a student is one of the few that doesn’t have internet access.

People upset with Kagi for partnering with Brave are going back to DuckDuckGo. But DDG also partners with Brave, and has for a while. There is no other option, really. It’s the enshitificatiom of search. They’re all poisonous in some way and users have to pick their poison.

Despite drinking coffee for decades, I have no idea what I like, and my grocery store had a coffee sale, so I did my own taste test this morning:

So far Dunkin' Original Blend > Starbucks Breakfast Blend > Starbucks Veranda.

Veranda was so bitter! I'm hoping I can rescue it by using it to make cold brew.

gdp,
@gdp@social.lol avatar

@grammargirl I can’t recommend a coffee subscription service highly enough. Trade and Atlas are great choices. Beans are roasted specifically for your order and that makes a huge difference. If you have a Lowe’s Foods nearby, you can usually find relatively fresh roasted beans there, too.
