Accidentally opened the back of my camera before rewinding the film and it turned out to be one of the best mistakes I've made in years.

Kyoto Tower Hotel. Nikon FM2n, Nikon Nikkor 50mm f1.4 (probably, although it miiight have been a 105mm f2.5), Fujifilm Fujicolor 200.

Pinched a finger trying to open the door of a sleek modern washer that had no obvious handle. Realizing that I really just want manual knobs and dials and control as much as possible.

Finally nabbed one of my dream lenses. Taking a walk today with this lens and only this lens. Nice to force focus and simplicity with a single prime.

I was blown away by this Jung Jaeho painting, "A Ball of Dwarf," at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul. Photo doesn't do it justice. It's enormous and somehow deeply affecting. That rocket in the sky just got me.

Bought these books at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul. Astounding, gorgeous B&W vérité photos by Han Youngsoo of Koreans in the 1950s and 1960s. A treasure.

Here's an article from the Guardian from 2017 about Han Youngsoo's work. I can't get enough of it. https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2017/feb/27/han-youngsoo-photographer-korea-seoul

Got home after being out of town and promptly fried my backup hard drive by accidentally plugging it back into the wrong power source. The plug area of the enclosure smells like burned rubber. Hopeful that it's just the enclosure and I can open it up and save the actual hard drive.

@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

Guess I'm cashing in some Staples gift cards and buying a new hard drive!

gregpak,

@yzh Thankfully it was just my Time Machine backup, but I've also got a Carbon Copy Cloner backup, and my original files are fine. Whew!

This Nikon F3 going for $176 on ShopGoodwill might have been a pretty big bargain. But I don't NEED this camera by any stretch, as nice as its reputation is. Couldn't justify bidding. Happy for whoever got it, though! https://shopgoodwill.com/item/173474535

Finally turned in a comic book script that I'd been grappling with for a while. Realized the big challenge was that my main character is keeping secrets from EVERYBODY in the story. So I had to find a way to clue the reader in to what he's planning without giving away too much and spoiling the twists. Ended up using just a little bit of evocative inner voice captions, which felt like they did the trick.

Seriously: I do wonder if all social media is doomed, if as any service scales, the human and financial cost of providing the kind of safety/moderation ethically required is ultimately unmanageable given the endless resources of trolls/monsters/saboteurs/spammers.

Just heard someone on a YouTube video tell viewers to "stay tuned" for something coming up later, and I'm struck by how some phrases outlive their initial context. Literally, it makes no sense to say "stay tuned" on YouTube, but everyone still knows what it means and thinks nothing of it, even people who have probably never actually watched a TV channel via terrestrial transmission.

@glennf @scalzi Takes two hands, right? One to hold the ear piece to your ear, the second to turn the crank on the side of the box?

Finally decided to watch a movie from 2017 that I'd missed at the time. Checked around and it's not streaming anywhere. No physical media in the US. Only way to get it is to buy a DVD from overseas. This is not what we were promised.

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

Must be agonizing to be a filmmaker whose work has essentially vanished within five or six years. At least as a comic book writer, I can feel pretty sure that physical copies of my books will always be floating around out there somewhere.

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

This reminds me that I need to start collecting physical media of my favorite movies, especially anything that wasn't a blockbuster. I've got a bunch from decades past, but I need to track down stuff from the past 10 to 15 years.

A thing worth remembering when mourning how many followers I'm leaving behind when Twitter dies is that my follower count there is full of many years of accumulated dormant and abandoned accounts. 50K seems like a lot, but it isn't really 50K. And the destructiveness of the algorithm makes what's left feel like even less.

Dunno if there's enough traffic here yet for this, but I've got a few minutes - if you have questions about areas of my expertise (comics, film photography, cooking, etc.), I'll try to answer!

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

@janellecshane That is a great question that I don't have an answer for, unfortunately! I've only cooked with dried beans once or twice -- I'm a kind of lazy cook and mostly use canned beans.
