@Barredo @james Or because of the advertising. You're right - I use a proprietary client, but AntennaPod is open source

Apparently the phrase "you're toast" originates from the 1984 Ghostbusters movie.

JRR Tolkien wrote in an English rooted in the Britain of 100 years ago. For that reason we're starting to lose touch with the language used in the book.

This is a thread of words and references that I have noticed in my current read-through, which I think might easily be misunderstood.

@ScotHomestead @Loukas Here in the US "stump" was current in 1974, and it's still very common!

Listening to Michaela Mahlberg interview @heuser. His description of "building as knowing" (3:30) put into words what bothers me so much about Copilot and other automated programming tools:

"If you have to build some process or algorithm it forces your mind to think about what literature, what cultural forms are really doing."

This is why I enjoy coding. Every program I write, I learn something - about history, students, or formalization or categorization themselves!

@heuser Writing an article or anything else is a similar form of building-as-knowing. By using programs like Copilot and ChatGPT, we deprive ourselves of the knowledge we would learn from the creative process.

On top of that, we are allowing Microsoft to use our interactions as training data. So we are actually giving the benefits of the creative process to some of the wealthiest people on the planet.

You want to treat trans people with decency, and reactionaries are all over it.

But large language model mania is taking over most of academia, and not a peep out of the reactionaries.

Sigh. I guess reaction just ain't what it used to be!

"Soon, our app will be compatible with certain other apps like Mastodon"

This seems to be a roundabout way of saying they're going to implement ActivityPub?

Select an editor. To change later, run 'select-editor'.

  1. /bin/nano <---- easiest
  2. /usr/bin/vim.basic
  3. /usr/bin/vim.tiny
  4. /bin/ed

PSA: if someone with expression hasn't expressed a clear preference for one gender over another, they probably don't want to hear which of their genders you prefer.

And maybe not even if they have.

serious question, why do people use or medium instead of just making their own blog? I assumed for monetization, but some ppl who certainly know how to make their own just write free blogs over there and idk what the deal is with that

grvsmth,
@grvsmth@lingo.lol avatar

@jonny At first I thought Medium was better suited to "longreads," but I'm not sure that's really true, especially since Medium has turned their backs on regular authors so decisively.

tbh partly it's because I had buckets for posts on tech/language, trans and transportation, and I didn't want to spin up a fourth Wordpress site just to make a new bucket...

@jonny When I found out that spyware was basically invented by a Norton executive I was like "wow, the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing!" but now you're making me think that was part of the plan all along...

Hey, I should introduce myself! I'm Angus (he) or Andrea (she), depending on the situation. I study language (like changes in French syntax) and make things with computers (like language corpora and web applications). I spend time advocating respect for diverse gender expression and safer, more sustainable transportation. I have a great family, including some cats. I like singing and hiking!
