Regulating AI is a complex problem. But let’s start with this: Counterfeiting humans should be illegal. https://flipboard.social/@CultureDesk/111166916789025736

gwcoffey,

@JamesGleick I would go further. Pretending to be human should be illegal. Any AI agent I encounter during an interaction with a business or app should be required to identify itself as such at the moment of contact.

@North It is an irony that the best way to figure out a tricky bit of code is to stop working on it.

MERCURY IS IN RETROGRADE NEXT WEEK!!!

What does this mean for you?

@badastro It means my periodic reminder that the Ptolemaic System is trash, Phil. That's something.

gwcoffey,
@gwcoffey@bookstodon.com avatar

@badastro Haha fair. I guess I should say it reminds me of the lengths we had to go to to try to square that innate sense with observed reality before we realized how thoroughly our senses had deceived us. Which now that I think of it is kind of wonderful and kind of sad.

Why do papers like the New York Times (in this case) feel it’s necessary to use this tortured language when reporting on weather disasters? The baseline for coverage of extreme flooding, storms, heat, and wild fires is that they are part of one story: the ongoing catastrophic global warming that is transforming our planet.

Are they worrying about hurting the feelings of climate-change deniers? We ought to be past that now.

gwcoffey,
@gwcoffey@bookstodon.com avatar

@JamesGleick Especially strange given that public policy is in some sense a game of aggregates. If you’re going to do this for climate why not everything? Why not welfare, guns, abortion, defense and on and on.

    @daringfireball At least for me that link doesn’t work without an account. (Fwiw the same is true for instagram for me but other people swear they can browse public posts without an account so I’m not sure what the parameters are.)
