I recently played Quest of Dungeons on the 3DS for a while. I kept coming back, but am not entirely convinced. It can be played fast paced which is very welcome. Probably the combat is where I would like to see more strategy or real time action.

I try to distribute my attention between Steam Deck, 3DS and Analogue Pocket. With this though, I was wondering why I don't fire up Hades or Transistor instead.

@jake4480 Wow, you are a fan! While I really like Hades (I am a fan of the Supergiant Games development overall), I spend quite some time with 2D pixel games, e.g. exploring old GB games. I am surprised that Quest of Dungeons does not click for me. Pity really.

@jake4480 I have not gone very deep but am discovering the well known. Nice to see the ideas that I enjoyed in modern games in a much earlier incarnation.

Someone here recommended Fire 'n Ice a while ago. I just finished it on the Analogue Pocket. It was the first NES game I ever played and I really enjoyed it.

It's a puzzle game where you push around blocks of ice to douse flames to complete a level. The fun part is that you can create or destroy ice only diagonally below your position, somewhat akin to Loderunner. Makes for some very interesting level designs!

A Fire 'n Ice level full of ice blocks, the player near the bottom and a single flame at the top of the screen.
An early Fire 'n Ice level with only a few blocks of ice, the player and two flames sticking out their tongues.
The level progression map of Fire 'n Ice. A cartoon-like landscape with key landmarks indicating a 'world' to enter.

Peeking out of a nest.

Another output from a local bird photoshoot in Amsterdam. The parakeets are of course very common here, they are often good for fun photos.

Forgot to send proof that I finished Shadow King. It's a little big metroidvania for Pico8. Comes with enough exploration to want to draw a mini-map, and super polished controls.

I gave away my C64 with all accessories and games a long time ago (to a nephew who just started with computers). When I let go of a whole collection I tend to keep one thing. In this case my first ever computer game Attack Of The Mutant Camels. Just found it again while looking for a soldering iron.

I finally got round to preparing my Miyoo Mini Plus. So far it's been straightforward. For a while I thought the Wifi was not working, but the only thing needed was patience and getting closer to the router. Got the native Pico8 installed plus some Pico8 games from my to-play list...

All that to finally play Shadow King by @johanpeitz (https://johanpeitz.itch.io/shadow-king). Johan managed to finish two more games while I was getting ready to play this one. I need to speed up a little.

The first images from the Euclid space telescope are in. I really like that they also show an image from when the telescope was not yet working correctly (not following a guide star and thus looking a bit tipsy)

@Liquidream Nice! I was wondering whether to get a Miyoo Mini or an RGB30 for a while now. This update tips the balance in favour of the Miyoo!

@Liquidream Yep, just seen that. I also don't mind the larger size. The plus it is! Thanks.

Anyone else's Analogue Pocket sometimes fully turn off it's game instead of sleeping?

Not a big fan of the power switch function but I don't THINK I'm holding it too long. sometimes booting takes forever on a white screen and once I press a button the game has reset.

Playing the GBC core with Pokemon Polished Crystal. Making me have to save more than I'm used to these days.

gwoptics,
@gwoptics@mastodon.nl avatar

@SirTapTap I have not had any problems with sleep/wake. So far I played only a few GBC cards and pocket files though.

That was that. Finished my first Zelda game (Link's awakening in the GBC version). I enjoy Zelda-likes and metroidvanias most, so it's about time I played the originals!

Obviously a great game, with many fun moments! The boss fights were easier than expected. The only thing that did not click: I did not get a good sense of location, the rooms/screens all felt a bit too similar. Roaming around in a scrolling game works better for me.

Screenshot of 'Zelda, Link's awakening', from the final cut scene at end of the game, showing Link on a small platform looking at the 'wind fish'.

Looks like I am getting closer to the final of Xeodrifter. I am eager to finish this now and then try my next small metroidvania, Shadow King by @johanpeitz.

@johanpeitz

Alas, Shadow King will have to wait. Fake-8, the Pico 8 emulator for the 3ds, cannot load the card - yet. The emulator is still in development and not all cards work.
