Last night I discovered my christening candle in a box of childhood items my parents gave me. This morning the bathroom lightbulb died while I was having a shower. So now, for the second time in my life, I’m getting washed by the light of a christening candle.

@kate the "candle stand" is epic tho!

After living remotely with only solar (+batteries) to power my home for past 5 years, I have greater appreciation for every watt that's spared - by hardware and software.

My workstation (Mac mini M1) and home server (ThinkCenter mini PC) use <30w between them. The Internet contraption with 4G router, PoE switch, and multiple APs uses another 20w. Laptop is <10w when charged.

Still 🤯 that my computing setup uses less power than an old 60w incandescent light bulb!

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

Of course monitor, speakers, amplifier and subwoofer take more power - for that I have separate power strips to shut off groups of devices I'm not using.

I can ignore this on sunny days because after charging the solar batteries, the inverter simply burns off excess energy.

But it's necessary during monsoons when it's so overcast on some days that the ten large panels barely catch any photons.

@greg the model is M700 with Intel Core i3 6th gen, 8 gb ram, 256 gb ssd. I got it as a replacement for my busted RasPi4/8GB (same price for refurbished M700 as new Pi)... and compared to that, this is a delight to operate 😬 is plenty for my needs - file server, file sync and to deploy my hobby programming stuff.

Funny how cloud computing took the worries from "Will my servers keep running under spikes?" to "Will I be able to afford the bills without going bankrupt?" and how hobbyists crave to get burned by this again and again 😬

Let companies with other's money to spend have the luxury of digital cattle. I'll stick with my small pet servers that have names 😂

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

The kicker is all the myriad scripts people have had to write to get rid of unused cloud resources that keep adding to your bills since there's no straightforward way provided by the cloud service company to deal with them.

The services are specifically designed to extract rent. Not difficult to see, unless you're not the one paying that rent.

I admire the cleverness of the business model for grabbing VC money via every startup with web scale dreams, but that playground isn't for a hobbyist.

Rode through smoldering aftermath of a forest fire. It was fine till late evening yesterday when I rode past this same stretch. This summer has been very dry, I hope it rains soon!

In today's drama, this is two minutes walk from my home. Not sure if the owner of this recently harvested timber patch lit it up intentionally as they often do to "clear up" the land. Hopefully the dirt roads are enough of a fire break. Neighbour and I are keeping a watch if it jumps across to our lands.

First thing I did this morning was decant* a bottle of Jameson. Then I realized it’s St. Patrick’s Day. If this doesn’t tell you who I am, nothing will.

My son gave me a globe decanter for Christmas a couple years ago, so I decided to keep my Jameson in that 🤷🏻‍♂️

Dogs aren’t usually allowed in public pools for health reasons but on the last day before they close for the season a pool near me invites all the local dogs for a swim. It’s the happiest thing imaginable

A happy looking brown corgi in a green life jacket stands on the edge of a pool
Two large wet black dogs at the edge of a pool
An orange and cream chow chow dog lies in a shallow pool

Keeping an eye on the road via Insta360 X3 while I have breakfast inside the restaurant 😬

Of course I have line of sight to the camera, yet pleasantly surprised that the wireless connectivity works at 10 meters distance.

Photobombed by kids who seemed excited to be done with school for the day. I have wondered why those "School Ahead" signboards always show kids running in this exact pose, I guess I know now 😬

I'll take this frame over the one devoid of people I had in mind before.
