just realized i've had the mollywhite.net domain for over 10 years(!!)
related sneak peek into an upcoming piece: i firmly believe that if you're going to spend money on one thing online it should be a domain, particularly as online identity gets more fragmented. as platforms come and go, you can always find me there.
@molly0xfff lol yeah, I keep paying for hazelnot.xyz despite it being a currently dead site on a shit TLD and using a shit provider, cause I mean, the more time passes the less likely it is I'll find another domain I'll be able to afford and at least I can have A Place on the internet
@futurebird "an"caps using the circle-A and the "become ungovernable" slogan is the funniest shit ever considering their perfect society is a corporatocracy even worse than the one we currently live in 💀
@gamolf_dev@golgaloth speaking of which, does anyone know of any tutorials for actually doing motion graphics with Blender?
Cause I've seen people recommend it for that but then not actually have any idea how to do it or where to even point people who wanna learn to, I've never been able to get a proper answer so I'm left with "just learn the entirety of Blender lmao"
@cheri do you mean mujdei or like, mayo garlic sauce like the bottled ones but homemade? Cause I love mujdei but I consider it a separate thing from garlic sauce lol
"Just use Linux" is much like "just ride a bike" or "just shop at a refill store" - accessing the non default option can be time consuming, expensive or unavailable locally. We need to recognise you need a certain degree of privilege to have the capacity to complicate your life voluntarily. We need to be trying to make the better, harder thing more accessible, not blaming people for not using it.
@Mux@afewbugs it's not about it being "for nerds" or not, it's simply less accessible because it's not The Default and it's not what people are already used to using
There's always gonna be an uphill struggle in cases like these, and blaming people for not essentially gambling away their time for something unknown to them just reinforces the idea that Linux is for pretentious nerds
@Mux@afewbugs yeah, which people feel forced to adapt to, while switching to Linux feels like a waste of time and energy when you're working two jobs just so you don't starve or end up homeless
@Mux@afewbugs it's the difference between "well I got a new computer cause the old one broke and now I gotta get used to this" and "I'm gonna install a new OS from scratch" when most people are terrified by the prospect of installing an operating system at all
There's a reason computer repair shops charge money to install Windows for you, cause most people can't do that
@fasnix@Mux@afewbugs I first used Windows in 2000 when I was a young child and first used Linux in like 2012 and only switched to it full-time in ~2021.
There's a difference between learning how to use a computer and thinking Windows is How Computers Work and learning a new OS as an adult especially if your computer skills aren't that good to begin with
Even if they are, I've been trying to convince my friends to switch to Linux for ages but they keep finding nitpicks about things that are different from what they're used to or some random game/app not working which they decide is a dealbreaker
It's so weird how many sci-fi stories will have technology that is hundreds, thousands, even ten thousands of years old and still just works, whereas in real life, it is a challenge to find 30+ year old technology that is still in an operable state
"a bunch of [...] Twitter usernames that are not controlled by people that are just robots that are programmed to release information related to all these different things and that's really interesting, it's kind of cool [...]"
How is this free? Like, it sounds incredibly useful and they'd have to compensate someone to test all those websites, right? Cause if they aren't paying the people doing it it just sounds exploitative as hell? 💀
I think most people are writing the rabbit r1 by Teenage Engineering as "another AI no one asked for" that might be true... HOWEVER LAM "Large Action Model" sounds interesting. An assistant to be able to use apps, not use APIs... literally use the apps by clicking buttons & such. But, the reason it sounds interesting is that fleeting hope it might, at long last, help me to avoid the little UI bugs/failings that drive me nuts in many apps.
Which begs the question: why not just fix the UIs? 1/
What's the cheapest mini-PC I could use as a media PC (i.e. slap Linux on it and hook it up to the TV permanently)? I have this ASUS stick PC thing but it's running on an old Atom CPU so it's not fast enough to be able to properly handle HD video decoding
I looked it up online and seems like the cheapest ones are like, 300€? Which isn't a lot-a lot but it's still kind of a lot for me 💀
The "mini" part isn't really that relevant, I currently use a laptop. It can even be bigger than that, I just said "mini" cause those tend to be smaller, cheaper and weaker than regular PCs haha
I would prefer it to be an actual PC though, not an Android device 😅
I will look into the one you sent me though, see if they're available here in Romania and for how much, and if they're actually fast enough for what I need
