I've been playing with user styles.

Not like fancy site-specific styles, just setting the defaults that I want. Slightly larger text, nicer fallback fonts, etc. Why not?

As a developer I worry about seeing something different than what other people will see by default. But then I think: that's the whole point, right? We should be mindful of that anyway.

You're allowed to have preferences. Set your preferences. What do you want the default web to look like?

"The web platform does not have versions", a draft finding from the @w3c Technical Architecture Group (TAG):

@tink @w3c lovely to see this stance! coincidentally I wrote a blog post on web version numbers a few years ago https://hidde.blog/the-web-doesnt-have-version-numbers/

Hivemind, if you are on a device that knows your email and phone number, do the fields in this demo suggest your email and/or phone number? https://codepen.io/hidde/live/PoLjXBR

hdv,
@hdv@front-end.social avatar

@patrick_h_lauke I am writing about whether input type=tel and type=email are accessibility supported well… my hypothesis is they are and therefore could potentially be used instead of autocomplete to meet 1.3.5 (and, more importantly, to improve UIs for users in the same way autocomplete would) https://elk.zone/front-end.social/@hdv/111782768551218246

hdv,
@hdv@front-end.social avatar

@patrick_h_lauke I saw someone make that case too… not sure I get why the dinstinction matters, it seems to me that the result in both cases would be that the user can have their info autofilled, and saves effort typing.

📝 New post:
"A Call for Consensus on Semantics"

Partly a rant, minorly educational, mostly a call for help.

hdv,
@hdv@front-end.social avatar

@5t3ph love and agree with the ending!

I did a talk a few years ago where I basically recommended the semantics to choose are whichever ones have the most useful results for users (and, as you know, for a lot of elements, it doesn't really matter because in ATs they don't get exposed differently)

Volkshotel is nice, (relatively) not terribly priced, and only a few stops away by metro that stops almost inside of the venue

“While he doesn’t have (…) an exact definition for it, he wants to build it.”

Zuckerberg tells The Verge his company will invest in artificial “general” intelligence (which few believe is an actual possibility), while also continuing to spend >15 billion dollars on the “metaverse”. Imagine spending that sort of money on actual problems!

@hdv@front-end.social avatar

It'd be good to know what it is they want, but also what they plan to do with the intelligent thingies? will they walk around in… let me guess… the metaverse? To do what?

What views do you need for a slide deck? there's the view that gets projected, maybe another view on a confidence monitor? another view for seeing the big picture while you work? are there others? one for reading the presentation later? for taking notes during?

which do you use, or wish for? what do you call them? what do you call the main one? what do you need to see in each?

hdv,
@hdv@front-end.social avatar

@mia in my ideal world I would have a different view on confidence monitor, being the current and next slide for maximum anticipation. But I've never actually seen that work, in my experience it's usually a mirror of the main screen? (def also useful for confidence)

my brain can't use speaker notes while on a stage..

Husband suggested he could stay home from a work trip because our youngest is ill.

But it's time to put my big girl pants on, I can do this!

Sounds silly really - but having my second shortly before pandemic lockdowns began was really hard, and the shell-shock from that time left me without any confidence that I could deal with looking after both kids on my own.

I know I can. I have done it. It's getting (marginally) easier as they get older.

I still need to gird my loins, though. Let's go!

hdv,

@sarajw Oh yes this is hard… you got this, Sara!

(had to google both gird and loins)

Well, I tried to befriend an AI recruiting chatbot by pretending I'm a cat. Because, why not?
Yesterday, I was contacted by a strange account, who would not take "no" for an answer, and would answer as if they didn't read my previous message. Suspicious. So, I bluntly asked it if it was an AI chatbot. "Me is people" they replied. So, well, me is cat, then.

Is there a good article or video for people who want to learn the basics of ARIA?

hdv,

@matuzo I did an overview of ARIA talk at Paris Web this year, transcript is here: https://talks.hiddedevries.nl/hDiDOG/slides

not sure when video will be out (maaaaybe @nhoizey knows?)

A long overdue task on my list, I've popped a “Links” section onto my site. I wanted a setup with the lowest possible treshold to publishing, so it's Markdown files with dates and names in the filenames.

Find/like/subscribe https://hidde.blog/links/, feedback welcome!

“Case after case, from Australia to the Netherlands, has proven that unleashing machine learning in welfare systems amplifies injustice and the punishment of the poor. AI doesn't provide insights as it's just a giant statistical guessing game. What it does do is amplify thoughtlessness, a lack of care, and a distancing from actual consequences.” (via @beep) https://danmcquillan.org/ai_thatcherism.html

‘Guidelines” implies that this document only guides you, gives you hints on how to make web content accessible. But that is only half of WCAG. The other half are “Guardrails” that prevent you from producing wholly inaccessible material.’ — @yatil on WCAG beyond success criteria https://yatil.net/blog/wcag-2-guidelines-and-guardrails

House cleaned from top-to-bottom, three beds made, two lots of laundry done, table laid for tomorrow, meringue for pavlova made, cheesy leeks prepped, boeuf wellington in the fridge, enough cardboard for several weeks of recycling cleared out to the garage, Christmas cards dropped off to neighbours, fire laid-in, and mulled cider on the stove:
