So! Got a science question for folks here. A while ago saw One World Trade Center in NYC get struck by lightning and seemingly that's a pretty common occurrence. The sides of the building are mostly glass so like, if you had your hand on the building when lightning struck the antenna on top, would you feel the lightning at all? How does a big building like that absorb lightning anyway?

@Talcott i dont know the real science behind this but i know it has to do with lightning rods! that's the antennea you're thinking of. it's drawing the lightning away from the actual antenneas that were up there that did broadcasting for ny at the time

i think the metal rods provide a path of least resistance to the ground in some way and since that's what electricity wants, it takes that path rather than trying to ground itself via the glass and concrete or whatever. i know glass is a good resistor of electricity bc they used to use glass on old electrical poles to insulate between the wood and wire!

so you def wouldnt feel the lightning touching the building... there would prob be a risk of an electrical surge to equipment inside but i think youd only feel it if you were like, touching the lightning rod? idk. someone correct me!

my friend Tala had some really bad news during a planned surgery - the same kind of cancer that killed my maternal grandfather before i was born.

i've known tala for a long time, they grew up with people i knew in their home area. they're just trying to get through this stupid world without dying and...well. here we go.

PLEASE help him out!! i dont have the resources to myself but he's in dire need of funds for the biopsy and tumor removal and staging. he's set the goal at 10k, which to my having-done-the-cancer-thing ear looks correct for what he'll need going forward. please, please help tala survive without losing everything in the process.

An immunocompromised person in my family got COVID for the first time, AT THE HOSPITAL because they stopped requiring ANY PRECAUTIONS. No masks, no nothing.

They can't avoid the hospital so that means they'll just have to roll the dice each time they go?

What a cruel world.

Immunocompromised means the vaccine doesn't work as well. So what the current US policy says is equivalent to "you're on your own" good luck! 😡😡😡

@dreamerhyena i used to browse craigslist for hilarious hornyposting too but theyve really cracked down on that :( and while browsing petfinder is super high yield serotonin at first, the urge to rescue em all eventually supersedes that and you get lovesick every time instead

Theres also instagram n tumblr but theyre kinda more of twitter tbqh. Algorithms punish the ppl you want to see and push "promoted" ads in your face instead.
