Hmm. All my Apple devices just simultaneously logged me out, and then when I logged back in I had a forced password reset for my apple ID. That is… concerning

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@glyph yeah it sure is

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@glyph you probably know, but as soon as you're in front of your password manager and aren't at risk of forgetting what you change, this would be an excellent time to also change the credentials on any email addresses that are listed as recovery addresses on the Apple account, and to add second-factor authentication if you don't already have it

@glyph good

I've seen enough episodes of Supernatural to know this means that self-driving cars are powered by demons.

@flargh (it's worth noting that this was an art project, not an actual exploit. it's still pretty great though.)

the highest incentive of any power structure is to protect its own existence

when universities deploy cops against their own people, think of it as the immune system attacking an irritant. the idea that anyone is in charge of these decisions at all may or may not turn out to be the case, but it barely matters because even if the people with nominal authority are thinking about the big picture, it's only on the way to choosing to let the system do the thing it's already primed to do.

irenes,

@BoydStephenSmithJr @cstross while Pournelle's observation is accurate, we still see him as having too individualist a lens on what's happening

from a cybernetic perspective the organization is a super-organism with a "will" of its own, separate from the wills of the people it's made out of. the long-term trend, for large organizations, on average, will ALWAYS be towards the incentives that emerge from the organization's structure. the anthill doesn't care if a few ants die.

this is going to rustle a few people's jimmies but it is a very earnest, very thoughtful post about the conflicting goals of rust and gamedev

https://loglog.games/blog/leaving-rust-gamedev/

it really echos a lot of the problems i've faced with static languages

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@glyph @tess @tef yeah, absolutely

also the procgen content that we do enjoy is very heavily tailored by artists who use code as their brush, and who deeply understand those algorithms. it takes MORE time to develop well, not less.

    @Nifflas oh wow yes

    this is very helpful. we've had this impossibly elaborate architecture in our head for a few years now, which among other things would add metadata to interfaces. this is a really useful thing to think about in connection with it.

    I like it when games let you change your character's gender and/or gender presentation at will, but I think it's really funny when it's locked behind an endgame quest. Like "I saved the world so I could fucking transition, ok?"

    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @BathysphereHat where's the lie though

    @xgranade @BathysphereHat congratulations! you defeated the big scary villain! now if you want a special challenge, try fighting a more realistic opponent - systemic oppression!

    I’m very fond of stories in a universe where some advanced, but long vanished, race of enigmatic aliens has left behind strange artifacts: like puzzle boxes or dungeons for our heroes to explore and nearly get killed in. If not aliens let it be a lost human civilization.

    I also like to think about those ancient people who built the ‘Temple of Doom’— for all of those traps to work so well after thousands of years they must have been very clever. What was it like to set them up?

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @futurebird right??? how many times did they have to test the big rolling ball to be sure it wouldn't get stuck on a tree root

    Joe Biden just banned Tik Tok.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/24/biden-signs-israel-ukraine-tiktok-bill-into-law.html

    If America can do this to Tik Tok, America can and will do it to whatever internet thing it is you like just as easily. Don't imagine China itself was the point of this. (The ban[s] cover ByteDance plus any company 20%+ owned within a country on this short list https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/4872#:~:text=metals%20and%20alloys.-,(2)Covered%20nation,-.%E2%80%94The%20term but given how easily this passed it seems a precedent is set for Congress to add whatever other company, organization or country it feels like to the list.)

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @mcc good eye. that language looks as though it also applies to free software package distributions. "marketplace" in 2(a)(1)(A) does not appear to have a definition though we didn't look too deep, so that part might be litigated, but 2(a)(1)(B) would appear to cover even something like a bsd port file or nix package.

    (edit: missing period)

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @mcc it's an excellent question that the legislation does not appear to have been intended to directly answer

    in general, US law applies to people and organizations over which the US has jurisdiction. so the question is whether the law is written to cover donating to or volunteering for an organization that does these things, without directly participating in the prohibited activity.

    Tumblr is an incredible website.

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @BathysphereHat @puppygirlhornypost sigh the structure of any platform that's centered on share-and-comment as a core activity is such that reactivity and exaggerating the importance of things are highly incentivized

    and tumblr's core audience skews young, so there's a lot of people who haven't yet developed cognitive antibodies to this sort of thing and are happy to help spread it

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @BathysphereHat @puppygirlhornypost every individual person will figure out in a few years that this wasn't worth their time and that the remarks they made trying to pull people towards reason were exacerbating the problem

    but it's the Eternal September issue, there's new people every year who haven't figured that out yet

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @BathysphereHat @puppygirlhornypost in our view, every credible effort at designing a mass-audience social space needs to address both reactivity and Endless September. there's no excuse for not trying to, the problems are so common across so many platforms at this point

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @BathysphereHat @puppygirlhornypost we often tell people that if we're ever REALLY angry at them, we will begin calmly and patiently explaining the structural factors that lead to people like them

    we are furious at people who invent and popularize shit like whatever the fuck this pillow discourse was. this analysis is how we choose to express that anger :D

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @BathysphereHat @puppygirlhornypost and our deepest sympathies, we're very sorry your post became the terrain on which that played out :(

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @BathysphereHat @puppygirlhornypost (maybe a post is more like a vehicle than terrain...? hmm... we're over-analyzing now, we'll stop)

    My astro 101 students are doing their final project peer review right now. They all had to find some piece of astronomy misinformation (like the earth is flat, or there are 2 suns, or UFO things) and make a 5 minute video explaining why it's false, using information from our class. They had to submit the videos earlier today, and now they are watching and grading 5 of their randomly-assigned peers (for a tiny fraction of their grade). And oh my gosh...so many email questions. So. Many.

    irenes,

    I love how Quark seems to sell food and drink in his bar except it is usually all replicated on a standard food replicator - the same type as dozens of others that are all over the station and are apparently free to use by anyone??

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @xgranade @foolishowl @bigzaphod it's worth keeping in mind that at no point in Star Trek history did Federation citizens ever learn how to actually dismantle systems of oppression

    they had a war one side-effect of which was that all the oppression got dismantled and people were like, yeah, let's not bring that back

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @xgranade @foolishowl @bigzaphod and this is why Star Trek is a wish-fulfillment fantasy and not a guide to action in the way that ie. Les Miserables is

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @glyph @danilo @fluffykittycat @bigzaphod they should do an episode pastiching the events of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judgment_of_Paris_(wine) but it's replicator vs. original
