@grivettcarnac do you still have the car parking space? i have a 2p4w rhoades car sociable hpv i could loan you for the school drop offs. as wide as a car, you might find it has a presence on the road that keeps kids safer? i dunno if it's a serious idea, but i feel you, roads in west ottawa are viscious and drivers around schools are somehow the worst.

@grivettcarnac looks just the one in the construction section

they would not be able to get around you, you have no option but to take the whole lane

@Dianora takes us both out though?

apparently they are foam bricks in the article so not even dangerous. real ones are cheap and free, we could really just start piles of them at crosswalks

@grivettcarnac iirc at least part of that walk appears to be down the part of robertson road with no sidewalk, little shoulder, and a 70 or 80 kmh limit. fuck off pedestrians indeed

The bike racks on Wellington West (as checked in advance in Streetview) must have been on March Break today so I had to lock to a bench instead. Lovely morning for a ride, though.

@WTL @lizjsutherland so infuriating, especially when lots of people cycle to our business and have no where to lock up. I often let cyclists bring their bike in, but it is not ideal

It is getting really hard to find credible news sources for #Ottawa and Ontario. The Citizen now mirrors the Sun, 1/3rd attacks on Trudeau, 1/3rd sports, 1/3rd auto ads.

The Star is now so pro-conservative that it can't be subscribed to.

CBC does 3 tangential Ottawa articles a day, almost nothing about local or provincial politics.

TVO's last "eastern Ontario" article is from the middle of July.

I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes open.

@johnefrancis i was overseas too long to know the history, but yeah, it's just ok. i think you are correct to higlight advertising as a force of enshittification of news.

not local, but i have recently been reading #TheContinent for news on Africa (where i was for a while) and been impressed, probably because they don't seem to have any ads, but i haven't figured out their funding model.

I would like to compare and contrast two here in the UK. They happen to be my job and my wife's job.

My job first. I work on a small part of a global manufacturing giant's website. I basically tweak it to add tiny improvements in style or the display of data. I can honestly say I have not done any work in the last 6 months that would generate income for my employers equal to what I am paid. I am literally wasting money for them. I get paid very handsomely to do this.

My job adds precisely fuck all to society as a whole. It only "benefits" the company I work for. I guess a proportion of the tax I pay goes to making the world better through funding the NHS etc.

My wife works in a council run day centre for people with all kinds of disabilities and additional needs. They play games, do arts and crafts, sing, go out for trips, provide access to the internet and more. My wife's job is basically to make people happy. To give them meaning in their lives and to give them something to look forward to. In doing that she takes pressure off the NHS, the police and more. She makes the world a better place.

The council had to wait for the governments last update to minimum wage as they worried that if they set their pay rate it would wind up being below minimum wage.

    The whole system is crazy.

@albertcardona @robcornelius I'm not doubting you, but I'd like more details about that connection, if you have some info handy
