Anyone who thinks "cancel culture" is some newfangled thing has never read one (1) Regency novel.

Social consequences for certain actions, up to and including complete "ruination," are nothing new.

@mishellbaker My son’s girlfriend got a post-law school job! After graduation, she’ll be clerking for a county district court judge here in MD.

Hey folks! What are your favourite examples of rescue fiction? Thunderbirds, The Guardian, Daylight, that sort of thing?

jappel,
@jappel@wandering.shop avatar

@AlasdairStuart Bujold’s The Borders of Infinity is top-notch, as is her Mirror Game, both of which are very rescue-oriented.

I subscribe to Karl Schroeder's newsletter, and in today's he says "Progress is not our younger generations’ lived experience," and holy smokes does that crystalize and make clear a lot of things. It's dead-on.

I'm not sure what the most common last words are but "If we split up, we'll cover more ground" has to be up there.

jappel,
@jappel@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker Way back when, Omni Magazine printed this factoid: in 24 out of 25 cockpit voice recorders, the last intelligible words before a crash were “Oh shit!” In the last one, it was “Jesus Christ.”

Calling for more recommendations for multi-season (4+) TV shows - this time looking for great slow-burn romance arcs.

Can be any genre of show that has at least some grounding in psychological reality (sf/fantasy is fine if it has a lived-in feel and the people behave like real people). The romance(s) can be straight or queer, so long as they are complex and satisfying, with killer chemistry! Ideas?

jappel,
@jappel@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker One from my youth that was famous for this is Moonlighting, though I don’t know how well a show from the mid-80s holds up. A newer one that I loved is Chuck, in which a nerdy guy gets a huge amount of secret intelligence dumped into his brain, and winds up with two intel agency handlers. Unfortunately Zach Levi and Adam Baldwin have since proven to be problematic. But the show is a lot of fun.

Besides bloomscrolling and catstodon, what are some hashtags that are full of uplifting, funny, creative, cool, or inspiring things?

⚠️ Request to those replying: please do not put the # in front of the hashtag name, to reduce hashtag pollution for those following the tags!

For example you can just say bloomscrolling or "bloomscrolling" or hashtag bloomscrolling.

@mishellbaker This a little out there, but here me out: woodworking. It’s people making stuff. Sometimes beautiful stuff, sometimes functional stuff, sometimes stuff that is both at once, sometimes stuff that is butt-ugly “get me to the next stage” stuff. People restoring old tools, old furniture, somtimes far older than themselves.

Recommendations for well-written, multi-season non-anime TV series with healing, uplifting vibes? From any era - just let me know where it can be streamed.

(Animated potentially okay if it doesn't have the 'anime look,' which for whatever reason I'm allergic to. Disney and first season Dragon Prince are good examples of animated things my eyeballs like.)

As if the homestretch to my big surgery on the 24th was not stressful enough, I am now in isolation in the in-law apartment because my daughter got Covid at school. Mild case, Matt and the other girl are not sick (yet), but we could not risk me getting it, so I will likely not touch any of my loved ones until I am in the hospital--if then, depending on recovery times.
