i miss my Blackberry. i miss that keyboard. also had a Huawei phone that looked like a Sidekick (the one pictured is by LG but twas similar).

the Huawei slider was my favorite phone and it irritates me we cant get Huaweis in the US. that was a solid phone; and rootable too boot.

pic of a two-tiered phone with a slider keyboard. the one pictured here is not the Huawei i had but it's a similar looking LG from the 2010s.

@blogdiva I absolutely flew on that BlackBerry keyboard and could do it without looking at the device. I clung for dear life. Hardware has a place.

My wife was trying to do some work on a site (she’s not a techie) and was complaining loudly about the terrible new interface. It was of course Gutenberg and its hideous blocks UI. I immediately recommended a plugin called “WordPress Classic”, which I have used for a while now. It fixes WP and brings back a UI that people can actually use. Sometimes I dispair about so-called progress in my profession (web tech). Gutenberg, React and its JavaScript bulk, what happened to Twitter, etc.

jaredwsmith,
@jaredwsmith@mastodon.online avatar

@ricmac I am a Gutenberg user for post editing primarily because it gave me a quick way to get up and running when my time budget was low, but it absolutely came with a cost because if I wanted to design a workflow around MarsEdit (for instance), I’m suddenly introducing incredible inconsistency. In retrospect, I somewhat regret it.

jaredwsmith,
@jaredwsmith@mastodon.online avatar

@ricmac One thing that has certainly flown under the radar is just how difficult of a problem it continues to be to implement a proper WYSIWYG web editor that doesn’t come with data integrity or otherwise severe performance compromises. And Gutenberg is actually not that bad in this respect, either, comparatively!

Getting so close to getting the new @chswx bot in production (in beta form, anyway) it is palpable.

Once it’s up there and is stable, I intend to open-source it.

@stooovie How’s it working for you? Thinking about getting on board at least on that device.

@stooovie I have the exact same iPad so that gives me quite a bit of confidence :) Archiving a backup now! And thank you!

jaredwsmith,
@jaredwsmith@mastodon.online avatar

@stooovie Yeah, I did the 15 and 16 betas on this guy, too, so I know what I’m getting into there for sure. Had a false start with the iOS 17 beta on my phone so I’m not ready to commit there just yet. :) Thanks again!

@mattlanza I vote Mastodon, the algorithm-driven Threads thing is not great for disasters/emergencies/timely weather info.

jaredwsmith,
@jaredwsmith@mastodon.online avatar

@mattlanza @ai6yr One thing I think Mastodon will always have a leg up on is how simple its API is to work with for automating feeds. That was a big reason wxtwitter won out the way it did.

I have no problem with government agencies, etc. flocking to places like Twitter to disseminate information. You go where the people are. There was always the risk of things going downhill with a centralized platform, but it was better for them to participate than not.

That being said, I’d love to see more government agencies stand up ActivityPub-compatible presences and start publishing to them. The Web standard is usually the safest bet for the long haul, IMO.

I'm curious how accurate the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature is in the NOAA model. 95F is about the limit of human beings without A/C. https://digital.mdl.nws.noaa.gov/

jaredwsmith,
@jaredwsmith@mastodon.online avatar

@ai6yr That should be derived directly from the NWS forecast grids if that’s coming from NDFD, so probably pretty good (and human quality controlled as well).
