Hey barkeepers, liebe Tresenwesen!
Is there a good method to cool down liquids without diluting them too much? Thinking of: tea as a base for iced tea drinks. I usually shake them through ice.
I guess preferred would be cold brew but I currently don't have space for a big jug in the fridge :/

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@bleeptrack You can put it in a (heat resistant) plastic bag, then hold that under running water. Alternatively, put a heavy glass or mug into the freezer and cool it down with that. There's also "ice cubes" made from stainless steel that you put into the freezer, then dump in the drink.

ICE1010 so:

  • ICE Sprinter (Mannheim - Köln Messe/Deutz)
  • ICE Sprinter (Köln Messe/Deutz - Essen)

... hält in:
Mannheim, Frankfurt, Siegburg/Bonn (???), Köln Messe/Deutz, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen

um... das widerspricht jetzt meinen naiven Verständnis, was ich dachte was ein ICE Sprinter ist und tut?

jaseg,

So my just catastrophically self-destructed. I was using arch with the yubikey full-disk encryption package, when the machine hung and crashed during a system update. The machine crashed exactly after the old initramfs files were cleaned up, and before the new ones were written to disk. Since the yubkikey fde thing stores the seed ("challenge") for the luks key in the initramfs, all copies of the seed are gone now, and the data on that disk is unrecoverable.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

Quite the failure mode if you ask me. I guess I will be scraping that yubikey fde thing from all of my machines now, and go back to plain passphrases. Deleting the old seed files before the new ones have been written and flushed to disk is a pretty bad design error.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@wonka I'm not sure, but I suspect whatever wrote the new files didn't make sure they were flushed to disk before deleting the old files.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@waldi it uses the yubikey in challenge-response mode instead of plain password mode so you can't read the luks passphrase out of the yubikey without the computer.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@jannem I mean I have been running arch for about ten years now and this is the first time I have had an issue like this.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@psotle @viq I have a backup for cases like physical damage or loss to the hardware key. That I have to resort to that backup because of an avoidable snafu like this is lame.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

Update: The backup has worked and I have restored the system to working order with minimal data loss.

Also anyone know good cheapish ergo mice? I'm eyeing logitech because habit, but the one I want is like $60 referb/$100 new

jaseg,

@emszabo I'm using a logitech MX vertical, and it's awesome. I went through four(!) cheap ergo mice before getting this logitech one, and they all broke. Only this one has held up, now for 5 years or so so far. IMHO well worth the money.

@naka I should probably hide several packs of those high-quality moldex earplugs in all of my pockets so that I have a backup 😅

@winslowjosiah I found hugo quite flexible for sites with or without blogs, as long as you're comfortable editing its HTML templates yourself. It allows for custom article types, categories and context-dependant rendering for things like article previews.

Okay, let's see if I can crowdsource this. Say I have a PCB with a few QFN parts on it and I really really want the whole thing to look as much like a DIP-40 as I can. I can probably either 3d-print the black epoxy bits, or 3d-print a mold, put the PCB in it and fill it with epoxy or something to get the case more-or-less right. What I can't figure out is how to do the pins. Standard headers don't look anything near correct. I could make the PCB with castellated edges and harvest the pins of existing DIP-chips, but that's a bit eek. I could really use some of those pins that thick film hybrids have, but I can't seem to buy those separately... any options I'm missing here? I can source stuff from the usual suspects as well as Taobao, by the way, and this is a very small scale production (well, prototype initially, not sure if I'm gonna do anything with it afterwards), so I don't need thousands.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@sprite_tm You could buy an actual DIP-40 chip, mill away the top half of the case to remove the die, bond wires, and expose the lead frame, then solder the PCB to the lead frame QFN-style with some solder paste in between. To avoid re-melting the solder on the PCB, use a low-temperature SnBi solder paste to attach the PCB to the lead frame. Finally, put the whole assembly in a mold to pot it, restoring the top half of the DIP-40 package.

Do not try to pull more than the rated current from a cheap Chinese Solar Charge controller's USB output.

@axwax Maybe XL1509? Seems to jibe with the pinout: https://www.xlsemi.com/datasheet/XL1509-EN.pdf

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@axwax If it's not that one, I'm sure it's some other XLSemi part. XLSemi is a big Chinese manufacturer of various switchmode regulator chips, and all their part numbers start with "XL".

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@axwax I have cooked more than one of their chips myself before. Some of them are rather robust, others are not. Overall I wouldn't rely on their built-in limits, especially when the chip has less heat sinking than XLSemi might have wanted (as seems to be the case in your solar controller).

5️⃣ Here's the 5th installment of my series of posts highlighting key new features of the upcoming v256 release of systemd.

I am pretty sure all of you are well aware of the venerable "sudo" tool that is a key component of most Linux distributions since a long time. At the surface it's a tool that allows an unprivileged user to acquire privileges temporarily, from within their existing login sessions, for just one command, or maybe for a subshell.

"sudo" is very very useful, as it…

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@pid_eins That sounds like a nice and clean solution. As far as I understand, this is also basically how privilege escalation is done on Windows, as opposed to the suid mechanism.

The project detour number...I lost count...is progressing quite nicely. The goal is to line up the edges. Instead of the brain-dead-simple (too high? -1 too low? +1) logic, I need to write a PID controller (or something like it) to avoid this sort of amusing to watch hunting.

Screen recording of Siglent oscilloscope. 100ns/ 1V/ Shows channel one 1Hz positive edge (and the source of trigger), and channel two a falling edge that's oscillating near the channel 1 edge.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@jeffpc That looks like you have some delay somewhere in your control loop? Otherwise a simple bang bang control shouldn't produce overshoot like that, just an oscillation by +/-1 that can be removed with some hysteresis.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@jeffpc If the bang-bang controller is already oscillating like that, I suspect you might need an integral term to dampen that oscillation.
