Brandee Younger - Blue Nile (Alice Coltrane)

also featuring her husband, bassist Dezron Douglas, with whom some of y'all will be familiar

I was lucky enough to see her do this song and some other Alice material with Ravi Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders once awhile back, and folks, it was really something

I think she is magnificent

@mrcompletely First time I saw her was opening for Tony Allen at LPR a few years back. It was her and Dezron, playing beautifully - and almost the entire room was ignoring them. I couldn't believe it! I made sure to watch out for both of them after that. Hopefully some of those folks now know what they missed.

And of course, the duo album they released in 2020 might be the definitive jazz album of the quarantine period. It really captures the emotion and turbulence (and hope) of those months.

Our Christmas Eve plans fell through due to sick relatives, so we're listening to jazz albums instead.

Now playing: Jimmy Smith - Organ Grinder Swing. A perfect organ trio with Kenny Burrell and Grady Tate. And in honor of the holiday, this album has one of the best versions of Greensleeves ever put to tape.

@bourgwick @vinylrecords the interactions between Zappa and Vinnie Colaiuta on those Shut Up And Play Your Guitar albums are otherworldly. I remember reading that Steve Vai had to invent new musical notation to transcribe some of the rhythms (later published in the Frank Zappa Guitar Book).

Fun early / track from NOLA great Eddie Bo

https://youtu.be/fxVqisBaGe8?si=7MHmJvW8v9rCLj3m

jasonisaacdrums,
@jasonisaacdrums@heads.social avatar

@arghdos I got nothin' on Frank Bocage, but I found many references to trumpeter/violinist Peter Bocage, an older cousin of Eddie Bo who was a contemporary of Buddy Bolden and a member of several important bands starting around 1905, including the Onward Brass Band. He played with almost every major figure of early jazz, including Sidney Bechet, King Oliver, Freddie Keppard, Kid Ory and (briefly) Louis Armstrong. His interviews in the '50s were reliable first-hand accounts of Bolden's style.

jasonisaacdrums,
@jasonisaacdrums@heads.social avatar

@arghdos This is interesting reading, although a bit far afield from the music his younger cousin would become known for.

Since we're staying two blocks away, it seemed like a good excuse to check out what was happening at the legendary Toronto venue Massey Hall. Turned out BOB DYLAN was playing tonight. Fun show! I'm not a Dylanologist so I didn't recognize much of the set, although Gotta Serve Somebody and Stella Blue were great.

Sorry, no pics. They made us put our phones in sealed pouches. LOL

Born 106 years ago today, Thelonious Monk fundamentally shaped jazz with his unique piano techniques and innovative compositions. During the bebop era, Monk's distinct style, marked by dissonance, intricate rhythms, and unconventional timing, pushed the boundaries of traditional jazz. He was one of a kind.
