@StillIRise1963 went to the site and saw that he’s also selling cologne(??). Gross.
In case you’re wondering what that might smell like - https://news.yahoo.com/ex-gop-lawmaker-describes-trump-001102631.html

It’s strange that the most egregious performance anti-patterns in frontend dev just persist, seemingly unlike other outdated practices. Like, putting JavaScript in the way of content delivery is a fundamentally bad pattern. Maybe the worst common issue. We all know this. But it’s still popularly practiced! It’s weird that we’re still advising the same things about performance from 2012. We managed to flip all of our Ajax to fetch() pretty quickly; why not these practices that impact users more?

@beep @scottjehl @zachleat sorry to butt in here, but - this all springs to my mind the question: “what would the Scotts, Ethans, and Zachs of today recommend as the most reasonable choices for building — greenfield — on the web?”

The new based on is an abject failure to improve the user experience. On every count it is objectively worse than previous iterations.

Page load time is poor, interactivity is gated seemingly on very large JS loads. Initial page layout is broken on mobile and randomly resizes the width of the viewport after loading. The number of micro-annoyances seem to be adding up daily.

This is like an object lesson in what not to do to your successful webapp.

jayroh,
@jayroh@ruby.social avatar

@bendelarre The web lost. React won. Now we all collectively live in the bed we made. It absolutely sucks.

jayroh,
@jayroh@ruby.social avatar

@ratkins @bendelarre “we” collectively, as an industry. Look around for a web eng job and more often than not you run into react, or something similar. Last 3 employers all fell for it.

@ratkins @bendelarre ay take that victory lap, Robert. When you’re right, you’re right

I've been wondering a lot about aging in software development.

Any > 40-year old developers out there that'd like to share their perspective?

How did you grow (technically, managing, etc...)? Picked up fields over others (embeded systems over web app, for instance)?

Would love to connect!

Boost for reach please 🙏

jayroh,
@jayroh@ruby.social avatar

@remi 46yo here. I believe that by the time you get up there into your 40's you've had more than enough time to dig into a deep level of self-awareness. Whether that's (merely) time, or existentialism, mortality, or pattern-matching - you should know yourself well enough to recognize strengths, weaknesses, and how to effectively evolve.

jayroh,
@jayroh@ruby.social avatar

@remi for me that was:

  • starting a family (impetus to get incredibly serious about pretty much everything - life, health, etc)
  • building a body of work where I could compare and contrast what worked well vs what didn't vs where I excelled and failed
  • having worked at a significant amt of companies to pattern match who did a particular job well or not

All of that led to - "I'm a pretty good engineer. I'd be a better manager."

jayroh,
@jayroh@ruby.social avatar

@remi The irony in my touting "self-awareness" is that the last statement above, "I am a good manager" -- I'm sure there are > 0 IC's who would call bullshit on it 😂

jayroh,
@jayroh@ruby.social avatar

@lewiscowles1986 @remi you are 100000% right! Important to remind myself of that every once in a while
