We've all heard the personal finance advice popularised by Robert Kiyosaki: "Pay yourself first."
The idea is that before you pay your bills, before you buy anything else, you should set aside money for savings and investing. Supposedly, this prioritizes your financial future.
I've never liked this advice. It rings hollow. It feels selfish.
@skye I'm glad you posted about what kinda boats orcas actually hit & they aren't billionaire owned ones. Actually, been talking to longtime whales specific scientists in my area of BC/PNW & none of us are very happy about how orcas are injuring themselves to death by hitting boats with their bodies. I am actually very worried because behaviour is abnormal & it has caused many whale deaths & whale disabilities - that media doesn't report about.
@msquebanh@skye "how orcas are injuring themselves to death by hitting boats with their bodies" no evidence of injury, much less death, in any of these Spain, Portugal, Morocco Orca boat rammings.
@msquebanh@skye The article from which this image is taken is much more circumspect as to what and how these apparent injuries are. In this article there is no mention of disability or death.
"That impulse to scour away the messiness that makes life resilient is what many conservation biologists call the “pathology of command and control.” Today, the same drive to centralize, control and extract has driven the internet to the same fate as the ravaged forests."
Early on in dating my future wife, I noticed that even though she's objectively brilliant, she doesn't pay a whole lot of attention to her environment. One of my favorite things to do is randomly buy her flowers and place them somewhere in plain view in the house and see how long it takes her to notice them. We're going on day 3 right now for a bouquet on the kitchen counter. 💐 🤣
@mike I have two young sons. One would notice immediately, and another would take half a day. The younger one is the more observant one. I call him Hawkeye.
I fully switched to Firefox a few months ago when Google kept on pushing their "Manifest V3" Chrome policy, now that they continue to push it and remove V2 (and with it meaningful adblockers) from Chrome in 2024 maybe you want to start migrating as well?
Don't go to Brave btw. It's a shit company that keeps doing shady stuff and is run by a homophobe. There are so many browsers, just pick one. (Whether other Chromium-based browsers will keep an interface for effective customization for users around is for you to research. Just use Firefox TBH).
“Our enemy”, Mr Andreessen, is people who are pathologically incapable of empathy and taking responsibility for their actions. How many lives is your future built on? I doubt you’ve even considered the answer.
I want many of the same things; a post-scarcity, interplanetary, fully automated sustainable luxury civilisation, but unlike you, I care about who we break along the way, and about who gets left behind.
@Floppy Andreesen writes "Our enemy is corruption, regulatory capture, monopolies, cartels." But those are exactly how "technology" is being managed after all this is a man who was on the board of a company and convinced it to sell an undervalued asset to himself
Is it possible to somehow train your body to be more warm? I'm one of those "always so cold" people. As I light up my zippo hand warmers to survive the chill I wonder ... why can't I just be warmer?
"Defense is not complicity": human rights activists and journalists are signing and circulating this open letter in response to the arrest of Alexey Navalny's legal team, which is a predictable but still outrageous escalation of the Kremlin's authoritarian crackdown.
