Literally no mainstream science organization supports the position "we're doomed so just give up" and yet somehow that's a common belief

How did we wind up here? This seems like a catastrophically bad messaging failure

we're probably all on the same page, but I really hope that the spam prevention measures we develop going forward don't come at the cost of individuals being able to self-host small instances

We're dealing with similar problems as email did in the past. Attempts to curtail email spam wound up with the worst of both worlds - a defacto inability to self host and large amounts of spam

With some ingenuity and work I think it's possible to create a system that is both secure and open

Airline disasters used to be semi-regular occurrences but the last time there was one in the US was in 2009 - it's been almost 15 years

Clown on Boeing all you want but flying is incredibly safe and this is thanks to a miraculous combination of good regulation and good engineering

Riding a bike burns about 50 Calories per mile. Burning a gallon of gas releases about 8,800 grams CO2e. By knowing how many grams of CO2 are emitted per Calorie of food, we can calculate the miles per gallon equivalent (in terms of GHG emissions) for biking depending on what you eat. Using values from here:

https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/ghg-kcal-poore

I get:

Calorie Source | Biking Fuel Economy
Beef | 5 MPG
Chicken | 32 MPG
Apples | 195 MPG
Wheat | 298 MPG
Nuts | 2514 MPG

I feel like buses are vastly underappreciated in circles. There are tons of videos on YouTube about Seattle's new light rail system, but virtually none about the bus system that serves over triple the number of riders

It makes sense, buses aren't new or exciting. Improvements are incremental and the problems haven't changed. It's not good content

As with their popularity with the poor, elderly, and disabled, what makes buses so useful is exactly what makes them so unglamorous

I've seen people call flat UI design a fad for over a decade now, but I'm increasingly convinced it's here for good

Skeuomorphism like Instagram's old camera icon existed to explain something new through analogies to something old and familiar: "this is an app for sharing photos"

When analogies are no longer needed, symbols like icons and logos can take on their own meaning. They benefit from simplicity because that lets them work in more contexts - small/large, b&w/color, print/screen etc.

I definitely think there's a lot of room for more information on how to actually bring about positive change in your city

I also feel rightfully called out for not attending city meetings

this is a PSA to buy a box fan and furnace filter for this year's inevitable summer smoke before they run out

I've got a particulate sensor and these things are remarkably effective and far cheaper than a dedicated air purifier

Dropped a piece of pasta on the ground so I went to toss it in my compost. It was too wide to fit so I broke it in half. One of the pieces went flying, bounced off something, and hit me just barely above the eye

That would've been possibly the stupidest way to damage my vision possible and I'm wondering if this was the spirit of Italy trying to take revenge on me for looking up vegan carbonara recipes

Game plan is to stock up on essentials today while wearing a mask, isolate 5 days, and do antigen tests days 3-6. Does that seem reasonable?

tooters, what's your take on electric mopeds?

In the same way that e-bikes are better suited for higher speeds and longer distances than electric scooters, electric mopeds seem like they could fill a currently empty niche, but I've never actually seen one here in Seattle

Of course they require a license and insurance to drive, so that ups the cost, but are they something that we should push for?

  • Higher magnitude stars are dimmer than lower magnitude ones
  • "Giant" and "dwarf" refer to brightness, not size
  • Population 3 stars formed before population 1 stars
  • Stars are given letters depending on their temperature, which are in order OBAFGKM
  • Planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets

Does any field have worse terminology and units than ?

Less than half [of Americans] think electric cars are better for the climate. Pretty damning, considering there is strong consensus that EVs have a lower carbon footprint (even when the electricity mix is pretty heavy in coal).3 Electric cars are certainly better for the climate in the United States.

Source

This is bad. Let your friends and family know that EVs are good, actually
