Aw, one of the off-brand streaming services just recommended Lois & Clark to me and it's just so cute that standard tv algorithms haven't yet accounted for the fact that viewers may not want to bask in the gauzy nostalgia of a show where the lead actor went on to become an actual neo-Nazi.

@MichaelPorter @GrimmReality Yeah, a "very leftist" Trump supporter seems to be a horseshoe.

The kids weren't so interested in anything Star Wars that wasn't also Lego before, so I'm watching Caravan of Courage with them. That seems to work!

@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

I've been catching up with some games I buy for the kids, and recently played Planet of Lana and Gris on the switch. Both show an interesting trend, in that they're very beautiful games, but strangely empty.

I notice this in particular with the first, because it reminds me a lot in how the character steers of @jmechner 's Prince of Persia, or Flashback. And compared to either of these games, there is very little going on in each screen in terms of obstacles or puzzles.

And then there are...

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

... seemingly endless stretches of landscape that you just run through before you reach the next puzzle screen.

I mean, I'm not opposed to having those. They give a more relaxed flow to playing, and perhaps they also hide loading of assets or something.

When you unlock a new gimmick, it seems it gets used only a handful of times, though - and sometimes you replace everything that goes before with it, instead of adding to your repertoire (that's not so bad in the first of these two).

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

What I'm not trying to do here, by the way, is complain that the games are lacking. It's more that they seem to shift the focus from playing a game to experiencing an impeccably art directed entertainment experience, which is quite beautiful.

And as something of a trend (too small a sample size to call it that, I guess), I find it interesting.

I recall the first such "experience" game I played, Journey, was still more crunchy with regards to puzzles and obstacles. That's quite old now,...

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

... so I suppose it's the span of time between then and now that makes it feel like a trend.

WDYT?

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Theriac No, I just heard about it. Why, what is that like?

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Theriac Hmm. I do also like the crunchiness of the older games, though.

I'll check it out, thank you!

saw a post the other day about someone who apparently studied how gen z and later have an esoteric/non-physics based definition of "energy" and i keep thinking about it... like my friend the physics definition makes no sense and isn't real either

Not so long ago, I finished parking about 900 computing related papers, books and magazines in my paperless instance. I felt like I'd finally finished the annoying work of fixing titles and tagging stuff.

Then I remembered the ca. 400 RPG related PDFs.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Real_Tom @Parabel @grimm Ja und nein. Ein zweites Problem ist, die extra Kosten vorher aufzubringen.

Pratchett's Boot Theory passt da ganz gut. Wenn man sich nur ein paar billige Schuhe leisten kann, kauft man halt jedes Jahr ein neues Paar. Ein guter Paar würde jahrelang halten und sich schnell amortisieren, ist aber zu teuer in der Anschaffung.

TL;DR, (relative) Armut verursacht (relative) Armut.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

Someone asked whether I ever played Doom. No, not really. I told that I've never liked first person shooters and then it hit me. I never liked them as there's too much going on. In fact, I've never been a big fan of any types of shooters, the only exception being Cannon Fodder. Now, with the new-found autistic perspective, it makes perfect sense. Sensory overdrive all the time equals no fun. How about my fellow autistics, any fans of shooters?

@actuallyautistic

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@mcr314 @LehtoriTuomo @actuallyautistic I liked Wolfenstein 3D, Doom 1+2, Quake and Half-Life. I played a bit of Unreal/Tournament and Quake 3 Arena.

And then I didn't like so much what else was happening.

Of course a bunch of modern games are also kinda shooter-y, without exactly being shooters. I do play them, if there's enough to pull me. But when things get billed as a shooter, chances are good I'll hate it.

The most modern shooter I enjoyed was Borderlands.

So I finally finished reading The Expanse with book 9. It took me a while, as I'm generally not reading as much as I'd like to these days.

Anyway, I think it was a good end to the series. Really good, actually.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@reconbot I haven't yet, but it's on my list.

What I can't get over is how much better it is than the semi related GoT. But sex and carnage sells, I suppose.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@reconbot What annoys me (in a good way) is that I've wanted to make a similar setting for RPGs. So on the one hand, I don't need to now that it's good as it is. On the other hand, it's doing some things I don't want to much (protomolecule related). The gripping hand is, it's excellent inspiration!

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@geekischade I'm not really looking for systems, except that I'm always looking for systems. I've bought more systems than I've played, because it's an area of interest to me from a game design point of view.

Realistically, I'd probably play Traveller, GURPS or possibly Space Master (this one mostly because I know RM rather well).
