@azonenberg Eh, because C++ was a moving target for a good decade or two, and now it seems to be slowing down again.

What did you expect? IBM is still in the process of ruining the few things that are still good about Red Hat. (Good article from SJVN, BTW): Did IBM make a $6.4 billion blunder by buying HashiCorp? https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/10/opinion_column_ibm_hashicorp/

Just pushed a new protoXEP for implementing Remote Control in , along with an accompanying implementation in !

This is exciting, as it enables not only Remote Desktop, but also controlling devices without video feedback - like using your phone as an ad-hoc touchpad, laptop keyboard to control a Single-board computer, or making automation scripts, and more!

It's designed to be extensible, with plans to add clipboard sharing and gamepad input. Thanks to for their support!

@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Goffi I remember my former coworker Dan doing something like that, but it was about 15 years ago. XMPP is a great container for such stuff!

None.
A light bulb is not changed. It is replaced.

@paul Who knows? Maybe instead of replacing it, some fairy magic heals it again. Surely that would change anybody!

Of geek interest: UUIDs have been around for a long time and they work well and interoperate fine, but the specification space is a mess. So the IETF just shipped RFC9562; it has a fine consideration of the history and the trade-offs involved in all the different flavors of UUIDs, and is well-written and I think, as of now, the place to start looking if something UUID-flavored is puzzling you. Strong work! https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc9562.html

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@spmatich @timbray Reminds me of the time some web devs complained that they can't store a UUID in 32 Bytes due to the dashes, and ended up choosing 16 random Bytes they stored as a hex string.

It led me to conclude that the problem with UUIDs is that they're way too simple and sensible.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@spmatich @timbray Or you could store the raw 16 bytes if space is a problem. Yes.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@spmatich @timbray Yes, that's why I call them web devs. That was their background, but in the project they were doing stuff in Rust with binary blobs, so it should've clicked.

The German prefix "ur-" is a time machine. Unfortunately, it only has one setting: to WAY back. A few examples:

alt = old
uralt = very old, ancient

Wald = forest
Urwald = primeval forest, jungle

Zustand = condition
Urzustand = original condition

Großmutter = grandmother
Urgroßmutter = great-grandmother
(here, each added "ur-" will make you jump back one more generation)

Funny: "Uhr" means "clock", so the "Ur-Uhr" would be the first clock ever - if someone finds it.

Enjoy ur-language!

@ErikUden Ich habe gerade vergebens nach einer maximalen Indexgroesse bei PostgreSQL gesucht...

Hmm.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@db_geek That's a pretty painful mastodon bug, though. Creating indices over (semi-)arbitrarily large strings is not a super efficient thing. If it's for deduplication, you need to normalize URLs anyway, so might as well just hash them afterwards. A nice, fixed length text field is so much easier to index. Especially in something like a btree.
