Israeli officials confiscated Al Jazeera equipment on Sunday, just hours after the cabinet approved a move to shut down the Qatar-based network's operations in Israel — an unprecedented action against an international media outlet. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/05/06/world/israel-al-jazeera-banning-broadcaster/

@thejapantimes It's not unprecedented. It's what dictatorships tend to do.

You've heard about the man vs. bear thing. Now for the ultimate poll:

Would you rather be trapped in an outhouse in the woods with...

:boost_ok:

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

This relates to the ongoing mystery of whether a bear shits in the woods. There's only one way to know...

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Theriac that seems excessively harsh. If you want to find out, fuck around yourself!

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

I'm gonna half to assume that those folk choosing Rowling here are also lactose intolerant and have packed copious cheese supplies. Otherwise it'd confuse me.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Theriac I wasn't asking women only.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Theriac also 😬

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Theriac I know, I know.

I just mash things up in my head, is all. And I'd be rather terrified of Rowling in a bathroom, to be honest, so the mashup made sense to me 🤷‍♂️

So, the reason I was looking at Star Wars - and other games - was because I'm questioning the whole point of "Character Advancement" in games that aren't power fantasies.

There are many games where you're just a "normal" person or "Normal+" 😉

Why do so many of those games have "advancement" or "levels" or whatever? Is it just because it's become expected? If you're not playing a Power Fantasy then why do characters just gaining power and capability at an impossible rate?

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@masukomi You're largely right, I think. But there is also a case to be made that everyday skills need practice, too, and there's a difference between a novice and master, say, woodworker. If that difference matters in your game, then advancing from one to the other should be included.

But that argument doesn't hold so easily when it comes to levelling up which confers arbitrary bonuses to everything.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@masukomi agreed

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@masukomi I think a lot of it is just bad habit, yes.

But then I also get the impression that a lot of RPG design is just that. I've spent a lot of time analysing different systems and talking to their makers over the years, and most of them - some more honestly than others - basically shrug and say "I tweaked the house rules based on D&D that I enjoyed most".

Which is IMHO fine in and of itself! It's just that it's possible to do differently, too.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@todwest @Jennifer @bookstodon The books are a lot better. The characters and their relationships are a lot more rounded there. And it's a series that... develops. I mean, every book there's something new (more or less), and the characters change with it. It's the development of them and the world, and how the two interact that is pretty well done.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Jennifer @todwest @bookstodon Yeah. I watched Season 1, then read the books, then couldn't return for Season 2 because the intra-crew melodrama was too much.

My wife first watched the show, then read the books - from that perspective, the show looks fine.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Jennifer @todwest @bookstodon Yup, I saw that while looking over my wife's shoulder. I mean, Drummer and Michio Pa are characters I had some trouble keeping apart, so the mashup makes some kind of sense to me :)

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Jennifer @todwest @bookstodon Speaking of the end, I think it's a pretty good close to the series. I remarked upon that only a few days ago, and people were saying it feels a bit deus ex machina. Which I agree with, it does... but the characters get a fitting end, each of them. So I forgive that.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Jennifer @todwest @bookstodon No, the novellas are still on my list!

Brett Scott published a really good piece on the cost of "cashlessness".

"Money is political, and that’s the starting point of the economics of cash."

https://www.asomo.co/p/the-cost-of-cashlessness

It's especially important since the only other time I hear people defending cash is when they fear a take-over from a shady, world-wide organization. And it's not that they want freedom, but they want another shady, world-wide organization to not lose its foothold.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar
jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@zdl @catileptic Sadly, it's not bullshit.

I mean, I live cash-free for most intents and purposes. But I've had periods of my life where my income wasn't stable - I could always get money, but perhaps not right now - and that makes banking surprisingly hard. And without access to the banking system, you're immediately unable to access other things, like a safe place to sleep, etc. (again, this worked out for me always, but with significant effort).

Basically, a cash-free life is...

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@zdl @catileptic ... Vimes' Boot Theory (from Pratchett) in real life: trivial for the sufficiently privileged, and yet another unnecessary hurdle for those who are not.

The worst part IMHO is that the hurdle of "sufficient privilege" here is so low, it really only hits those folk hard who already have next to nothing, so it becomes largely invisible to the majority of folk.

I'm very, very adamant that cash must stay, even if I don't particularly want to use it most days.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@zdl @catileptic That said, there are definitely alternatives to keeping cash around that would address the same kinds of issues, but those nobody seems to want to talk about.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@zdl @catileptic I'm not forcing anyone. You can keep paying cash-free. I'm not arguing that you shouldn't be able to. I'm saying people should be able to pay with cash.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@zdl @catileptic The problems are not related to cash or lack thereof, but they exist the same everywhere. Changing the system around it is a noble goal, but so far off that saving cash is a necessary intermediate step.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@zdl @zeh @wendyg @catileptic I'm not ignoring it, I addressed it.
