@halide Is Halide Macro mode OK?

Comparing macro shots from default Camera and Halide, I found there was a lot of noise and ugly sharpening in the Halide ones, and after doing some controlled tests with a tripod and remote shutter, it seems to confirm my hunch.

The Halide versions of these are worse, right? Less detail and oversharpened, with chunky noise in the background despite a lower ISO.

Any chance Halide could “use default macro" and just add the manual focus/exposure options?

A comparison of two images like the previous photo, again showing over sharpening.

jerclarke,
@jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

@halide The thing is that I absolutely need Halide in order to do macro, because the default camera’s lens switching makes it almost impossible to get focus. Halide's manual focus tools, and even just the ability to force it to not switch to the main lens, are required.

But if I use the default Halide mode with 0.5x, I lose too much resolution, and if I turn on Halide Macro, it gives such worse results than default macro. It's a real dilemma.

Hopefully there's a solution out there somehow.

@halide Is there some way Halide could add metadata to images that would show in the macOS Photos app? Or to see which images are from Halide with what's there now?

I can see "Saved from Halide” when browsing on iOS, but it's invisible on my MacBook. Maybe it's just an omission from Apple, and they'll update it at some point. macOS Photos all around sucks compared to on iOS.

Would be really useful in figuring when Halide improves my captures without opening my phone to check.

Just to be clear: Mickey Mouse being in the public domain doesn't matter and never did, other than Disney being the antagonist promoting copyright term extensions over the course of the 20th century.

What matters is the literally endless list of other works that were kept out of the commons because of Mickey.

Mickey was a reverse-canary in the coal mine. Now that his copyright is finally dead, the rest of culture can finally breathe free.

    Excellent overview of a difficult subject by @globalvoices

    “Over the last 45 years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has weaponized textbooks, religious debates, movies and series, city walls, and even cemeteries to impose cultural violence and institutionalize its dominance, particularly over religious minorities.”

    Homosexuality, in a strict semantic sense of being attracted to only to exactly the same gender as oneself, requires gender to be categorizable within a finite set.

    If gender is represented as a vector, the idea of any two people having completely identical genders is absurd.

    In this essay, I will

    jerclarke,
    @jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

    @ryanc Love the ending 😂

    Seriously though, once I came out as non-binary it really hit me how bad the labels are. People had questions and all I could give them were rants.

    Personally I think we should focus on "what you like" rather than “what you are” as a starting point, and the “philia" words work best for that.

    E.g.
    Androphilia: into dudes
    Gynophilia: into dudettes
    Ceterophilia: into etcetera

    The last one is the most controversial but I'm always hoping to make it happen anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

    @chris Sorry for whatever you saw. I love mine, but it can also be triggering.

    You probably already know about the ability to dig into the annoying photo and disable that subject showing up in memories, but just in case, it's possible! You can definitely block faces it recognizes.

    I use it recklessly. No reason for anything that upset you to ever show there. I just wish there were more options, it's not letting me block my pets, and I'd love an option to block locations too!

    Working on mocking up a wireframe or a page I’d like my team to build (I’m a developer turned eng management, not a designer).

    I don’t do this often enough to know my way around Figma, or any other tool.

    I’ve found the easiest way is to write the enough HTML and CSS to get the look close to what I want then ask the team to turn that into functional code.

    Just me?

    @jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

    @shawnhooper I like using Affinity Designer for all kinds of things, simple and speedy.

    I find using it for web is perilous though. It's hard to know if my responsive ideas are plausible or not without going to the browser.

    @chris The dream of “Blogs” is alive and well on Mastodon, not just as something to link to, but Mastodon itself is "microblogging" in a way that Twitter hasn't been for years/over a decade.

    Blogging actually sucked back in the day. RSS was mediocre at best and commenting was a nightmare. I love it here.

    Anyone here dictate to their phone (via headphones) while on a morning walk? I am thinking about starting, but don't really want people staring at me like I am insane.

    I shouldn't care, but I do, viscerally, so just take that as a given.

    jerclarke,
    @jerclarke@mastodon.social avatar

    @grrrr_shark I’ve done it a bit, though I tend to walk in a secluded area so the social part isn’t so bad.

    The issue for me is having to stop to correct the text. Very frustrating because I try to keep my heart rate up. Not sure what my point is other than I always wish it worked better because it’s such a great idea in theory.

    Might be worth trying again after the LLM update to dictation in iOS 17 🤔

    @ivory FWIW I'm still waiting for some way to take a nice screenshot of toots. How long would it take to add 5 more px of space below the text when in single-toot view?
