Sharing syllabus for summer asynchronous online class: intro to human

CC-BY-SA-4, comments or emails welcome

Readings course (incl books by @jenniferraff @annaleen). Felt experimental for freshman but very successful. Students pull individual takes on sources but pushed toward shared goals by prompts and scaffolds. Feels more rewarding than exams. Students can see others' work for all but book reports

It seems like an Xtra special day to share my "Mastodon Teaching Packet" of the materials I used to teach social informatics students how to explore and assess Mastodon this past spring. In previous years it was a Twitter Xercise.

CC-BY-SA, have fun. If you do find this helpful a brief email (on doc footer) or reply here is always welcome for the annual report :-)

I really don't care about the Twitter change to X, but I will offer two hot takes:

  1. Changing the bird logo to "X" while keeping everything the same looks cheap and half-assed, which I guess is on-brand for the world's foremost developer of exploding transportation

  2. That stylized "X" looks like a porn logo, is that going to attract general purpose advertisers?

My uni is now 18mo into complete Microsoft office management ecosystem. I might be the only person on campus who understands the functional differences and overlaps in user behaviors between Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint. File organization, sharing are now Lovecraftian nightmares of non-Euclidean chthonic geometries, with multiple local administrative and departmental jargons to describe ritual practices. My concerns voiced to admins treated like gibbering madness

Copypasta from USFWS on bird site ... there is a feather atlas that exists

"Hey, what feather is this? Sometimes it's necessary to know what feather belongs to what bird in order to solve a wildlife crime. Our law enforcement personnell use the Feather Atlas, and you can too:"

Log into M this morning, see nice discussions of art, tech, science, politics, history.

Log into T, see scientist reporting death threats that moderators there don’t care about, other folks complaining (rightfully) that timelines are now enshittified by mgmt.

Tell me you’re a bot farm without telling me … I got followed by this account targeting nothing but “Josh” people from a sketchy domain … it felt slightly weird at first blocking whole domains on Mastodon, but I’ve done it a couple of times now and have realized how important it is for both a personal and ecosystem experience.

3. Main page for truth social.co.in posts show basically nothing but the admin
2. Inspection of original truthsocial.co.in profile following nothing but accounts named Josh
4. Blocking the entire domain truth social.co.in

Oh, King, eh, very nice. And how do you get that, eh? By exploiting the workers! By hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society.

Gordon Lightfoot died today, which is also Great Lakes Awareness Day 2023. Fitting, since his music in no small part probably helped many people know the Great Lakes, to understand their importance and natural power.

I was yesterday years old when I learned that a recently hatched echidna is called a puggle. Puggles!
