A small review of Spirited Away at the Coliseum for those who like Ghibli stuff and maybe also saw Totoro (or did not see Totoro and are thinking this will be a good alternative).

We saw it last night. It was good, but the Coliseum is hot and cramped and (this was a big deal) the play is 100% in Japanese, with subtitles to the left and right of the stage. In practice this means you miss action in the centre, when looking at the titles, then you get over-focussed on the titles, and miss action.

@bloor Oh gosh thank you, good to know. We aere booked in June. Is it worth the ticket price, do you feel, for thoe who don't speak any Japanese? Do you miss too much reading the subtitles?

Hello Mastodon folks,
I know many of you are tech savvy, unlike me. Please can I ask your advice?
I have students taking an exam on their own laptops, requiring them to have 3.5 hours battery power.
If you can't achieve 3.5 hours on a full charge and you can't plug it because you've got no plug socket available, what to do?
Is there some kind of external power pack or back up battery you can buy?
What are the possible solutions for: a) Macs and b) PCs?
Please help by either answering or sharing.

@snigdha This seems a very restrictive policy, effectively punishing those who don't have the funds to buy such extra batteries? Is there no way the exam hall can provide extension cables for desks on the outside row of the hall or something?

@ahnlak and I have decided to skip a long-haul trip next year and take a bunch of shorter trips in UK and Europe. And then in 2024 we will return to Japan again, though not sure which regions and for how long. But it's exciting to start planning for some of these!

The one thing I will say from recent events… I was a bit paranoid over COVID anyway. But now I have good reason to be massively more so. Giving me a stroke is bad, and now I know I am susceptible to that, I really cannot risk catching it again.

@revk I hear you! I think people have become complacent because, for most of the population, the actual period of infection is not awful, and there is far less hospitalisation, let alone deaths. However, the long covid / damage to organs is still a huge problem. I struggled with the worst fatigue I've ever had for 6 months following catching Covid for the first time in early March. And that wasn't half as scary as your stroke. 😞

This may be one of those "it is different for different people and nobody realises" things.

But talking to stroke doctor he asked about migraines, and I explained I get an aura, on one side or the other.

He was "so it only affects one eye or the other", and I corrected him - "no, one side of my vision or the other", and he repeated the "one eye or the other".

It is not one eye or the other!
It is in my vision, not my eye, and is one side of my vision.

@revk Yes, I get an aura that is to one side of my vision (always left) but it's not only in one eye! It doesn't matter which eye I'm looking through, the aura is there, at the left of my vision.

Just to say, I am back home now, slept well, and it looks like my wife won’t be letting me out of her sight for a while :-)

I think the fact I decided I was having a stroke and walked to hospital while she was out might be a factor…

It is seriously impossibly to get any sleep in an ED, even between the hourly obs. I will be glad to get out of here in the morning… so much for going on to an actual ward over night, FFS.

The problem with getting covid on this cruise now is that I just want to be back home. The symptoms have gone (slight lingering cough, but that could take weeks). So I could “enjoy” the rest of the cruise. But to be honest, I’d like to just go home. Oh well.
