I spent 20+ years on the hedonic treadmill, only to realize it doesn't lead anywhere. Now I'm a metamodern hippe living in the far north with my husband https://unstraight.club/@Nightwolf and our two dogs. My passion project right now is a contemporary urban space opera called "The Psychonaut Chronicles". See pinned threads for more about me and where I live. I alt-text images and expect the same from you.

@Thoreau I see prison cells in the future. Isolation cells that have a floor that both prevents escape, and allows exercise. With automated NutriBase dispensers in the walls, which three times a day dispense a nutritious soup (flavor optional, costs extra for the governments using Disney Pentitentiary, the world's largest private prison contractor)

In short: fully automated prison facilities that require very little staff.

I wonder what the nicest most peaceful calm period has been in human history in the last 5000 years? Where was it? Was there a ever a civilization that was notably civil and less murder-y than others?

Who did it and how? How long did it last?

Are the halcyon days of yore a big giant myth? Is there always a victim of some else's peace?

I have studied so many wars. I don't know much about peace.

@Thoreau I’ve been thinking about this, and I think that the average human was happiest pre-agricultural revolution.

Ignorance is bliss. With agriculture came the misguided idea that we can control nature. I wouldn’t be surprised if the original fall from Eden stories describe that transition. We lost our innocence when we went from being subjects of nature, to attempting to be her master.

@Thoreau @ElleGray the real stuff starts happening once the ants get fed up. There's over two million of them for each and every one of us. I'm fairly sure two million ants could take down one human (I hope I never get to find out).

This might also be inspired by me finishing Children of Time.

Public Service in Sweden makes strange choices. When reporting on Israel's genocide trial, they chose to interview an Israeli professor who works at an Israeli university in an occupied area.

Why choose an Israeli? Why not someone neutral? Of course the Israeli professor working in a school on land taken from Palestinians will be all “it's not genocide, it's just a little unfortunate that our government speaks like that”

Swedish Public Service is so milquetoast that their logo should be beige.

We signed our thank you cards from the wedding, and my husband said “we should sign Micke & Mike because that sounds better, right?”

I agree that it sounds better, but I think it sounds better because it's what we constantly hear here in Sweden. People knew me first, so they put my name first.

I suspect his family and friends refer to us as "Michael and Micke”.

From this comes a theory that how someone says a couple's name is an indicator of who in the couple they knew first.

kazarnowicz, to Dogs Swedish
@kazarnowicz@unstraight.club avatar

My husband is listening to an audiobooks about dog lifespans. Turns out that most dog food is the equivalent of ultra processed fast food for humans, and this brings a dog's lifespan down just like it would a human’s.

We started feeding our dogs half kibble, and half raw meat or eggs and small portions of various stuff like strawberries and broccoli, chaga, and sour milk.

Their coats were shiny before, but now they're also much softer. And they stopped shedding.

The more you know …

The loop is looping. What's happening now has happened before and will happen again. Groundhog's Day, Groundhog's epoch. Groundhog's universe.

It's hard to think big when you are caught in your tiny blip of a life as the universe expands and contracts.

All these Ozymandias egos, excited to think their name might last 500 years, 5000 years. What is that next to 13.8 billion years? To the infinite and unknown?

We are just not remotely humble at all!

@Thoreau @archesofscratch73

yes, the number of members in the largest hunter-gatherer tribes is about the same as Dunbar's number. I have to read more about this period in humans, but unfortunately we know next to nothing about the things that matter (to me): how did we feel, how did we reason about our existence, about ourselves and our group back then?

I can't wait for the wormholes from “The Light of Other Days” to be available.

kazarnowicz,
@kazarnowicz@unstraight.club avatar

@archesofscratch73 @Thoreau

When you had a bullshit job in the sixties you could make up for that by having dreams about the future that were achievable - because everything would get better. The techno-optimism is gone, the dream of things getting better is becoming more and more ephemeral, and I don't think there are many countries in the west where millennials can expect a better life, like GenX could.

Depression and anxiety are endemic features of our current society.

kazarnowicz,
@kazarnowicz@unstraight.club avatar

@archesofscratch73 @Thoreau I can recommend "The Cosmic Serpent - DNA and the origins of knowledge”. The first pages is a rigorous criticism of anthropology as it was in the 80s and 90s. The author is an anthropologist, and they make good points about the lens that anthropology was using (and likely still does in parts, it takes time for academia to change)

I did this back in 2014-2016: worked on minimizing how often I felt annoyed or angry by random stuff. For me, the question that helped a lot was similar: "what's the story that I tell myself?”

Someone acting selfish in traffic could be a forking shirtball, or they could be speeding home because of a family emergency.

It worked really well to actively tell a different story, and after a while I started making those automatically. The power of words and thoughts …

In hindsight, adopting two dogs is one of the best things I’ve done as a (sci-fi) author. Before Dante and Ori, I was subconsciously planet-of-red-hat-ing animals in general, and dogs in particular.

Getting to know two individuals with a history we only can glean in their behavior, learning how to communicate with them, slowly earning their trust, and glimpsing the world through their minds is like befriending two aliens.

I see the world differently now.

kazarnowicz,
@kazarnowicz@unstraight.club avatar

@Thoreau yes! And seeing them learn from each other. Dante (the bigger one) has learned that kisses mean "please" and now Ori has started doing it when he wants something.
