OTOH, I have really gotten into eating kimchi lately, and I can't help but imagine Teenage Me would not be impressed to learn Adult Me really gets off on sneaking into the kitchen about eight at night and snacking on hot garlic infused cabbage.

Also, don't even think about kissing me RN.

Oh, I am a mess!

I have no idea what's going on, but today I woke up with eyes and nose gushing as if to challenge Cardi B to write a sequel to WAP. My eyes are puffy, I'm sneezing like crazy and nose is stuffed.

I suspect allergies, but to WHAT? We still have snow, and nothing has started to sprout yet.

Also: allergy medicine barely helps.

Thoreau,
@Thoreau@mas.to avatar

@kazarnowicz Are you feeling better?

Thoreau,
@Thoreau@mas.to avatar

@kazarnowicz I had a Seattle friend who was allergic to snow. She literally starts sneezing in snow and breaks out in huge hives. Some sort of autoimmune overreaction to the cold. Can you imagine? I don't know where she is any more but I hope she moved to some place tropical.

That would be terrible up north where you are!
Glad you are feeling better.

@Thoreau@mas.to avatar

I just ordered the book Xenolinguistics by Douglass Vakoch. I can buy it on Kindle for 27.95, Hardback for 170.00 bucks on sale, or 48.00 in paperback.

Theoretical linguists must be making bank or somebody does not want just anyone reading this book.

Maybe he is teaching a university class with it or something.

Meanwhile, baby girl writer over here just wants to know how to talk to the aliens. ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™†โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Why is there so much crying and so many feelings in Star Trek Discovery? I am not saying anything bad, I am just saying this might not be my cup of space tea. I like my tea to be piping hot Earl Grey with some scowling, not all luminous tears and space therapy.

Don't tell anybody I got on my cranky Gen X horse. I am not sure I can handle more dramatic sobs and pained looks.

Thoreau,
@Thoreau@mas.to avatar

@whitmad Exactly. I feel like if I were a shipmate I would be saying, "Just hit the button. Just hit the button. Just go. Just go. Go. Hit the button. Can we talk about it later? Just.Hit.The.Button!" Over and over again.

Or, quite possibly, "Snap out of it!"

Goodness.

I am folding laundry watching Ronin (1998) with Robert Deniro, Sean Bean, Jean Reno, Stellan Skarsgaard, Jonathan Pryce and Natascha McElhone in it.

Between Ronin (1998) and Halo (2024) Natascha McElhone looks ageless and stunning. I mean, she could be a clone!

Thoreau, to Disney
@Thoreau@mas.to avatar

Disney is now charging a two dollar resort fee to have access to a garbage can at the park. You will have to swipe your resort bracelet to unlock a garbage can to throw away a wrapper from the food you bought at Disney....and it will be automatically charged at the hotel.

The ecoconscious part of me says, yeah, okay. The inner rebel feels that Disney is expensive enough, and you just see where I put that garbage. Lol

Get ready for "The Omni Loop." I, too, feel like I have a black hole in my chest, hence my penchant for sarcasm and good whiskey on my vanilla ice cream.

This got a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. We shall see.

I woke up at 2am after a relentless nightmare about being hunted by a T-Rex. He chased me through the darkest forest, in a giant industrial garage, had me hiding in closets and the bottom of murky ponds. He had me mouthing "He's coming!" to others with sweat on my brow. Other people are so dumb and loud!

Man, was my amygdala tripping out on flight, fight or freeze impulses! I'm totally tense now! T-Rex's are the worst!

I don't understand why pitted olives are called pitted olives. Wouldn't they more accurately be called unpitted or depitted olives? If there is no longer a pit, because you removed it, it should not be labeled "pitted!"

I think English messed this one up.

Thoreau,
@Thoreau@mas.to avatar

@tshirtman I did some research, and apparently, I am looking at that word all wrong. It comes from a Latin-German-Old English route and refers to something having holes or dents in it. I.e. "Look down into the pit for gold." "His face was pitted with acne."

The fact the stone or seed of the olive is called a pit is an after-added meaning. Just enough to confuse me.

While making spaghetti tonight, I could barely get through the process as the oven fan was on, and, you know, running. Oven fans are so freaking LOUD. Bzzzzzhhhhzxhhhzhh! My brain can't take it.

That got me thinking about how I truly despise the obnoxious guest bathroom fan, which tortures me further because of its very bright Gitmo overhead light that just interrogates you mercilessly. It's traumatic!

Which leads me to my long-winded Proustian question.

How noisy is the International Space station? How noisy is the inside of a space ship?

Obviously we know space doesn't carry sound. However, is there an abrasive rude droning fan that will force me to go crazy after a month... I mean..., a day, I mean...five minutes?

Broken ticking droning fans in space. Oi!

No matter how many ways we create to communicate, humans will always find a way to drive each other crazy with it. At work I have to culturally know who will answer an actual telephone and who would rather die, who keeps their calendar online up to date and who is a conscientious objector to sharing calendars, who will answer a teams call whenever, and who believes all calls must be scheduled 3 weeks in advance. Who answers quickest on text and who never looks at their personal phone.

Thoreau,
@Thoreau@mas.to avatar

Also, I have to intuit who reads all their emails every couple of hours and who checks them every couple of days, who wants a paper copy to review and who'd rather die than look at anything but a screen, who brings a pen to meetings and who uses a tablet, who shows up without their laptop unless you remind them ten times and who will carry their laptop to their grave in a vise-like grip. I have to figure out who needs a text so they will read the email I sent.

Thoreau,
@Thoreau@mas.to avatar

I need to know who needs a phone call reminder to get on the Teams call and who hates Teams and only wants Zoom calls.

I might need a beer.

I wonder what the nicest most peaceful calm period has been in human history in the last 5000 years? Where was it? Was there a ever a civilization that was notably civil and less murder-y than others?

Who did it and how? How long did it last?

Are the halcyon days of yore a big giant myth? Is there always a victim of some else's peace?

I have studied so many wars. I don't know much about peace.

@dancast Yes, I struggled with the book, too. It is so complex and morose. When HBO coming out wih Game of Thrones, I wondered how the heck they were going to interpret all these complex giant-ass books with a billion characters I had read and David Benioff and David Weiss did a good job making it comprehensible on film.

I wondered the same thing about how David Goyer et al were going to handle the Foundation Series.

Anyway, Benioff and Weiss--we will see how much they change the book.

kazarnowicz, (edited ) to Dogs
@kazarnowicz@unstraight.club avatar

In hindsight, adopting two dogs is one of the best things Iโ€™ve done as a (sci-fi) author. Before Dante and Ori, I was subconsciously planet-of-red-hat-ing animals in general, and dogs in particular.

Getting to know two individuals with a history we only can glean in their behavior, learning how to communicate with them, slowly earning their trust, and glimpsing the world through their minds is like befriending two aliens.

I see the world differently now.

Thoreau,
@Thoreau@mas.to avatar

@kazarnowicz Having two dogs at once is so informing, because besides learning to decode what the dog is saying you, you have to decode how the dogs talk to each other. My two dogs have a whole dictionary of facial expressions, breathing noises and head tilts that have nothing to do with barking, but say so much. They have these funny rules about fairness when they play with each other, ways of looking at each other when they want to gang up and taunt the cat. So much beingness to explore.
