The problem with hand-waving freakoutery is that it's easy to say that something is a nothingburger with a slice of innocuous cheese on top.

Like this "chrome wants to ban adblockers" story. The defense might be "oh, it's just a tool for establishing trust and has nothing to do with adblocker-blocking or DRM".

But such new tech isn't just a tool. Technology has a direction, too. A destination it will steadily progress toward. That technological direction needs to be accounted for. Carefully.

Computer-derived suggestions, ranked by complexity:

  1. spellcheck: a simple algorithm that checks against a list of known words

  2. autocorrect: a more complex algorithm using words ranked by usage

  3. search autocomplete: a complex algorithm that factors in recent trends

  4. generative text and search "results": an artificial vizier whispering hypnotic horse hockey into your ear

Hot takes are the mind-killer.
Hot takes are the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face the hot takes.
I will permit them to pass over me and through me.
And when they have gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see their path.
Where the hot takes have gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

My fellow developers & product owners:

There will come a time, and soon, when you are tasked with updating Ye Olde Social Icons to use new assets for the former birdsite.

I hope that when you're assigned this burden, you will opt to simply remove the icons and embeds and integrations, rather than doing free work for musk.

If musk wants social icons, he can pay for them.

No free labour for billionaires.

(On a more practical level, that site is clearly too volatile to code against. Move on.)

Hey, neat. An accommodation from slack that is close enough to the much-requested "block" capability that I think it's a good thing.

Slack user profile of Some Person, a Freelance developer, with the kebab menu dropped down. At the bottom of the menu, in red, it says "Hide ".

As one naturally ends up doing, I started writing a Mastodon client last night. Very early stages. PHP-based. CLI-only. Planning to use it to automate some fave/bookmark stuff so I don't forget about things I wanted to go back to.

I'm calling it ... TUNDRA.

"Canadians will no longer have access to news information on Facebook and Instagram"

Well, that's OK - I'm sure there will be plenty of misinformation to make up for it.

This trend of wrapping APIs in an extortionate cost structure is going to be a big problem for tools like Zapier if it catches on.

I have a suspicion that the right way to develop a project for fedi is to start small, build it in relative obscurity - with a single community server to act as a demo.

Then, if the demo reaches some level of criticality, the appropriate actions are either:

A) Turn it off. Gently, of course.
B) Lock it so that no new signups are allowed.
C) Spin it off as a separate entity, likely a co-operative.

This will encourage the project to grow, and will separate development from community management.

Hmm, Zapier just updated their TOS to include wording about AI stuff. They seem to be very explicit about the fact that the training stuff is for internal use only, not resale.

Cue freakout? Or are they handling it properly?

Live-action ? The thought hadn't occurred to me, but now I am extremely intrigued.

Props to Feedly, their feed export process is much less of a headache than Evernote's export process. Also, Feedly seems to have added a Mastodon sharing target. I'm going to try that out in a bit.
